i know we debate this every year but i'm going on more clearer record saying that 2003 was an awesome year for music. maybe the best year out of the past 5 or 8 years. i just heard the Thorns album in it's entirety and i think it's great. if i ever did re-evaluate my yearly-best of lists this might squeeze in there, but then again, there might not be any room for it.

The Thorns? The Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins, Pete Droge alt.country.pop.overproduced trio? I might be wrong, but i remember going into a diabetic coma over that album. And I love sugary pop.

I'm betting you mean a different album/band...

Seems to be a three-year pattern for me.

Off the top of my head I'd say 2001. We'll see when Konstantiranks gets back that far.

2003 was a fantastic year. I probably bought 70 great albums during that time period.

2004 was a bit of a let down and 2005, while decent, needs to shape up.

Like anyone cares but anyway....

I added up the total Konstantimarks awarded to the Top Twenty albums from each of the three years I have completed or up to date. Bit unfair on 2005 since (hopefully) there are albums coming up that would go into the present Top Twenty but here's how it looked anyway.

2005 - 141.40
2004 - 142.82
2003 - 144.98

So far, 2005 is a good year for hip hop.

What is there to debate. 2003 is the best year of music this century. All hail 2003.

yeah 2001 was good too. other years this century were good. i guess i'm a bright-side kinda guy so it's for me to say "this year sucked" etc. but 2003 was awesome. as far as the Thorns go, i've built up a tolerance to sugary and sweet pop pap through years of oldies, beach boys, bubblegum, pop punk, and ...eating many jujyfruits.

Have to agree with 2003 being best so far.

2004 I didn't find much I liked.

And this year I don't think I've heard one damn thing yet that's appealed to me, but I also haven't come across any cd's I really can't wait to have yet either.

Personally, I liked 2002 better than 2003, but I am also in the mindset that no year is a bad year for music and that I can always find stuff I dig.

2002:
Wilco
Interpol
Shalabi Effect
Spoon - KTM
p:ano
Dalek
Mclusky
Little Joe Gould
Sigur Ros
John Vanderslice
Six Organs of Admittance
Do Make Say Think
Acid Mothers Temple
GY!BE
Centaur
Blackalicious

2003:
Explosions in the Sky
MMJ
[[[[VVRRSNN]]]]
Okkervil River
Lyrics Born
Outkast
Radiohead
Jay-Z
Missy Elliot
Lightning Bolt
Beulah
Murder By Death

Totally agree. Thought 2003 was good, 2004 was so-so and 2005 has sucked pretty hard so far. Even the stuff I was excited about like the White Strips, Foo Fighters, and Teenage Fanclub have all be pretty meh for me. The only CDs I've been really excited about are Okkerville River, Ryan Adams and Spoon. That's if you don't include the Dinosaur Jr. reissues anyway.
