So I got the 3rd generation right when it came out in May of '03. I think my battery has finally called it quits. I cannot get the player to power up when it's not attached to the plug to charge it. Also, when it is plugged into the wall to charge the hold option will not disappear/let up. Is it my battery that died, or something more?

I hear it costs over $100 to replace the battery and will they even replace it with the better battery?? Do I get it back quickly? I'm thinking of just buying the newer version. I don't think I can go more than a day without an Ipod. What did I ever do years ago?? Didn't want to spend $400, but for me it's a need, not a want.

Check the rebate deal that Apple is offering on certain older models, you might be partly covered.

$39.95 Sony Discman maybe?

Sorry to hear about your i-pod no worky. Boy, its threads like these that make me incredibly leery about ever buying one for myself.

It only costs that much from Apple. Use http://www.ipodbattery.com/ instead, DIY for $29.

Why? His Ipod's battery lasted through (what sounds like) two years of intensive usage. $30 to replace a battery is nothing.

Thanks for the responses. I did get Apple's letter in the mail about the battery thing. I'm still working on finding the receipt or my credit card statement. Organization is not one of my finer points.

Thanks for the link for that battery! Intensive use is I think an understatement. It was used constantly when I was in school, walking around the city, the L, etc. I used it everytime I worked out as well. This has in no way swayed me from another Apple product. For the $300 I paid I think I got my money's worth and if it only costs $30 to fix, I'm happy!

that DIY thing sounds good, except for putting it in. This direction makes me nervous.

Measure down the right or left seam of the iPod 6 cm (60mm)...this is the point to begin prying the case. At this point, insert the included screwdriver and begin to pry open the case, working back and forth along the seam.

I think it sounds worse than it is. To be sure you don't hurt your Ipod, be sure to put some masking tape on the blade of the screwdriver so there's no metal-to-metal contact. Remember - it was built to be reopened. It may not look like it, but Apple has to be able to make repairs without damaging every unit in the process.

Think of it this way: if you don't repair the battery, you're out the cost of a new Ipod. If you happen to somehow destroy your Ipod in the process of installing the battery, you're still out the cost of an Ipod and a bit more for the battery (but who knows, you might be able to send it back to them or sell it on Ebay?) There's even a market for "dead" Ipods - people want these things to experiment on, so you might be able to make some money back.

Wtf! I just fully charged it and unplugged it from the wall and it turned on! It's back to normal...for now. The toggle switch for hold is still wack and has to be hit a few times before I can press a button. Weird.

I had a small panic attack the other day when I pressed play on my IRiver and it showed 0 files. Then I just turned it off and back on and everything was cool.

sorry if you already know this, but holding the play and menu buttons for 5 seconds gives you a restart that clears up just about anything.

Does anyone know if the IPod photo will work with the original USB 1.0?? It says 2.0 is required, but would it still transfer with 1.0? Thanks!

For my friend, although I'm really leaning towards getting the bigger one. I only have 10gb. It worked perfectly fine today btw.

I think I saw this discussed on http://www.ipodlounge.com forums, so you may want to check there to be sure, but I believe some said that it would . . . but veeerrrrryyyyy ssssslllloooowwwllllyyyy. Why not just buy a $10 USB 2.0 card? Easy to install - just pop open your case, slip it in your motherboard, turn on your computer, and let Windows install the drivers (if you have XP, if not, you'll just use the disc it includes.)
