...an audience of a particular genre
I bring this up because of the Clap Hands Yeah thread. It seems in the last 5 years their has been a divide over albums or artists whether popular or indie. This may be the case for any emerging artist, but we here at obner seem to have consistent debacles over the same artists or a particular album. What are some artists, albums, or works that you recollect being a divider as opposed to uniter among an audience?

Wilco - YHF
The Walkmen

How somebody can like MIA is beyond me.

The National just seem so vanilla, but honestly I haven't really given them a proper listen.

How can the be polarizing when they are SO TERRIBLE?!?!! ;)

Almost every topic not started by me in the rap forum has set a great divide between me and all the other posters in that forum.

yep, best heated discussions I can recall were about the latest coldplay or YHF.

"It's Wide Awake..." goes back and forth for me. I mean down to the individual songs, where I love Another Travelin Song, but on Poison Oak he just goes over the top on warbliness. I just wanna busty-slap him.

One of my favourites, The Fiery Furnaces, seem to split the board.

I think the entire dance-punk thing is pretty dividing, just as electroclash was 2 years ago (or was it 3?) on these boards.
Xiu Xiu
The Wrens (just to reaffirm)
Joanna Newsom
LCD Soundsystem
DFA 1979
Beck - Guero

okay those last 3 might just be me

What's your stated opinion on that Beck, there, cotton-pants?

i just don't like it. I mean, a good amount of this probably stems from hearing "girl" on npr fucking 32 times a day, but the rest of the album doesn't exactly bowl me over. He had a nice stride going with making a kickass party record, then a slow, boring sinkhole of depression album. Only this last one wasn't really a kickass party record (not in the sense that Vultures was, anyway.
i mean, it's an okay album, but i leave it at that in the best case.

Joanna Newsom

i went to her show last night because someone put me on the guest list, but i really hadn't heard more than a few songs by her because that voice was so grating. one of my friends saw her last year and said the voice is way more tolerable, even beautiful, at a show. so, the first song was pretty eh. the second song was new, but it floored me. oh my god, i was transfixed. and then the next few songs were really eh again. i left after about 20 minutes.

i'd say the top two all-time dividers here and many other places were

White Stripes (they are shitty rip-offs vs. they actually successfully re-invented the wheel)

Radiohead (they are pretentious vs. they actually successfully evolved as a band instead of becoming a stale product of the mainstream)

the former i recalled spawned at least one immense multi-page debate, and smaller ones along the way, the latter has been argued at length many, many times, since the CMJ board popped up circa 2000, and then again twice a year every year since.

and one that has not been mentioned yet:

Death Cab For Cutie/Postal Service

I recall Avril Lavigne spawned a fairly long debate as well.
