I think 2005 has been a let-down for music overall so I'm not excited about a lot of bands right now. Other topics that aren't music-related can be fun but are not the reason I joined this board. I'd post a new music topic if I had something interesting to say but I don't.

I think people come and go, but like mentioned before there's not much of a new bloodline so this board has to ride the waves of fluctuating posting.

This is somewhat true although I'd still say there are less music threads than there used to be. But to tommy's point, I'm less inclined to post about some newly found album I love when experience has shown that the thread will mostly sink unnoticed while a "what are you having for lunch" thread gets about 80 posts and multiple hundreds of views.

And to just say if you want more discussion of music, start a thread misses the point. I don't necessarily want more threads about bands billy g knows and likes, I want more threads that will tell billy g about bands he doesn't know but will like.

And I'm not complaining about the non-music related threads, the mongerous activities of the GA boys are some of the more interesting threads still here. I just wish that there were more threads that sparked my musical interest these days and despite all of Loogar's posts to the contrary there just aren't as many as there used to be. I still spend a lot of time here, but my commitment to this place has dropped like it has for others. When I get busier I will post less and lurk a lot less.

An observation on the notion of having an NMR section, with hopes of keeping nmr posts out of RnR...

It seems like even if we had such a category, a lot of posts here start off one way and then go the other. "Look what was in my Toaster" turns into a treatise on Andrew Bird, and "Arcade Fire for President [poll]" turns into why the Dems are ruined. But I'd be willing to try.

I was going to say something like this. Everything here revolves around music, but not everything is ONLY about music,. If you read threads, and are involved in discussion, you will be introduced to new music. It is also a good resource if you notice people who have similar tastes and like to share. I know oldbulee and I have swapper probably 5 albums in the past 3 weeks, and Dumpjack has ysi'd me almost too much stuff.

It is really about what your priorities are. I post a lot because I have a boring ass job that entails lots of time sitting in front of a computer...I don't know what I would do w/o this place (or CMJ) or whatever...cos I many days I literally have like 2 hours of work to do, but have to stay in the office and answer phones, etc. most of the day.

Edit: in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Blue Lantern didn't much care for Kate Bush.

Damn. That sucks. Not about Kate Bush, though, he's right on there.

What we need are the remainder of the promised Flostini pics.

I call hogwash on a few points:

1) IF there was an NMR forum, I would never click on it. Leave things alone.

2) I'm still finding music-related stuff that I need (e.g. - I saw shiv mention the new Single Frame album in a thread. I didn't even know that they had one out. Now I've ordered it.)

3) Not hogwash, but, how much would one of those suicidegirls-style ads cost to put up on PFM. Now that would draw a crowd. Is that what we really want?

Yes, Dalen, you definately have your fans. If you haven't felt the love, I am schocked. I sure as hell hear about it.

i probably post more NMR topics than anyone else put together. you don't like that tell me. and no, i wouldn't use a different forum. it's the stew of this one that keeps me returning. krist, look at how little the hip-hop board is used.

Bullseye. I, too, have become disenchanted when you look at the threads that garner the most replies... 85% of them are everyday, boring stuff that I can talk with my co-workers about, but choose not to because it's boring.

This place is a little cliquey as well... not shocking for a message board, but a solid reason people come and go.

This is kinda silly - I have never heard of most bands you post about, and thus have nothing to say. That does not mean I don't appreciate your post, or that I won't check them out based on your recommendations.

Let's explore that a little further, if you don't mind. Does anyone really want me to post "Hmm, never heard of 'em" when somebody mentions a new band? If there are links to files, I damn-near always go listen, but if it's just a name drop or a mention of a good show, cool, I'll remember the name, but I don't have anything to say about it. *But* it doesn't mean I didn't read it. I don't see the number of replies as the key metric of a thread's importance.

That describes perfectly the old CMJ board that so many appear to be feeling such misplaced nostalgia for - except on that board it was pretty much All Chicago, All The Time.

is it really necessary to be this self-aware on a message board on the internet?

i joined cmj (and consequently, obner) to learn and share about music, but also because i find many people here to be intelligent and often hilarious. if people are talking about things beyond music, who gives a shit? don't read it. to be honest, i don't like to post much in music threads because i am sometimes intimidated by those with way more knowledge than me. oh well.

that being said, i enjoy spending time here and i value everyone for what they bring to this place.

This reminds me of when a bar back in Athens decided to do a Simpsons trivia night. I watched the simpsons waaay too much, knew every line, etc. So I went with a few friends.

Here's the parallel: I knew more about that show than, say, 95% of people at large (like music, maybe), but that top 1 or 2%, was just WAY over my head. It wasn't fun. That one table answered every single question before the guy could even turn the music back on, and they never missed anything.

At work, most of us are probably considered "music geeks" because we go to small, cheap shows and like Spoon or whatnot, but there are a few people on this board who just put the rest of us to shame (without meaning to, and not mean-spiritedly), and whether they realize it or not, sometimes it's intimidating to voice any sort of opinion about more obscure music that way.

No I wouldn't really want you to post "Hmm, never heard of 'em" but If I spend 15 minutes gathering up info on an artist I really dig...finding links with more information and possibly mp3's then if no one shows any overt interest it seems like it was a waste of time. If you're likely to look into the artist further than say so. If no one is that interested then why bother?

And Dalen does/used to post a lot of mixes, ysi's etc. I don't have a lot in common with him taste wise so I often ignore his music threads, but I'm sure others download the stuff, like it and say nothing. A simple thanks would be nice. A more detailed follow-up discussion after you've listened of what you like and don't like of what he uploaded would be nicer still. I mean this is supposed to be a music discussion board even if we get sidetracked on other personal stuff. I don't blame him for stopping if he doesn't think its worth his time anymore.

We used to exchange mixes on the board all the time when it was common courtesy to write a short review. With rapidshare & ysi its much easier to do so now but we don't seem to do it nearly as much because no one bothers to discuss them afterward.
