Dri...dude, I'm not going out tonight either. As much as I wanna see Say Hi To Your Mom AND Youth Group (and our boys, Oslo), I'm staying home. I didn't get out until late from The Embrace / Long-View show last night and am pooped today. Tomorrow is the High Dials at Spaceland, though. You interested in going to that?

Dunno. Shhhh...don't tell anyone, but I'm actually getting burned out going to shows. I've got three next week already, so will probably stay close to home this weekend. Have a great time, though!

I listened to this album today and thought it was okay. Definitely not worth the 9.0 Pitchfork gave it, maybe a 6.5-7. The singer's voice is pretty annoying though it really didn't bother me all that much past the first 2 songs. I wonder what KPH thinks of it as I recall he didn't like the dude from the Arcade Fire's singing. The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth is my favorite song on this I think.

I read the Pitchfork review. I want to check them out on their name alone.

Earlier, I had my above named favorite song on repeat for like 1/2 an hour and liked it more and more each time it played.

When and where is this free autolux show? If I have nothing better to do I may be interested.

That must have been a good, informative Pitchfork review, because after reading it I was 100% certain I didn't want to hear a note of this.

It's weird to read this thread and see how dividing this band is, especially when I know that the guy who writes all of the songs is one of the most positive and hardworking musicians I've ever met. I'm guessing that this is more about the resentment for the pitchfork hype machine than about the music itself. God knows I've reacted the same way about a lot of their reviews, namely the Arcade Fire, the Rapture, and their ironic(?) love for some awful mainstream rap.

It's definitely a bit despairing to see how much power pitchfork has (this band, without a record label has sold about 700 copies since the review came out... they've also signed with the same agent who books concerts for AEROSMITH and DAVE MATTHEWS) but, for me, it's like seeing a good friend hit the lottery.

i've never heard a note of this band, but It's possible that this has nothing to do with P'fork.
Maybe despite your friend's work and intentions, his music still stinks to some people?

Some people like it. Some people don't. Big deal. I don't see any line being drawn in the sand or anything.

But yeah, Pitchfork does wield some amazing power, apparently.

Get over yourself, it's not that fucking good.

As I've said before, I read Pitchfork maybe once every couple of months, and that's to see who has released an album I may have missed.

As a general rule, I rarely, if ever, read record reviews from anywhere as a determining factor in what I choose to purchase. I'll read them for entertainment purposes in some situations, but that's not very frequent either.

I know it's hard to believe, but I use my ears, not my eyes, as the primary influence on my purchases.

So you know the guy in the band, good for you. So he's hard working, bra-fucking-vo. Lenn Sakata busted his ass in the Major Leagues for over ten years and the only way he gets into Cooperstown is if he buys a ticket like the rest of us schlubs. More often than not, hard work ain't enough. It also takes talent.

The music is the same old, same old indie rocker hipster puss-rock with some of the most embarrassing vocals I've heard in a while. If that's what you like, fine, but to toss any contrasting opinions off into the knee-jerk wastebasket that is "backlash" due to any "pitchfork hype machine" is ridiculous.

It's OK, but nothing stupendous. I'd probably go see them if they played in this neck, though...

Then again, I haven't given the entire album a thrice-over yet, so I reserve the right to change my opinion...
