I want to go on the record as being the first person on this board to be discussing this band. Just because (if there is a god) they will be huge, and it'll make me feel special.

They're the newest signing to the Arts & Crafts record label. From Milton, Ontario, they were discovered by members of the label while touring around and signed them.

Their debut album, Underwater Cinematographer, is out in Canada tomorrow and in the USA on July 14. The best way to describe them is, basically, Broken Social Scene Jr..

It's six kids -- well, my age, so twenties?, I'm guessing -- five guys, one girl, various guitarists, trombone, keyboards, etc. Song titles like "The Protagonist Suddenly Realizes What He Must Do In The Middle Of Downtown Traffic" and "Where Cedar Nouns And Adverbs Walk" give a basic idea of what the lyrics are like.

Their site:
http://www.arts-crafts.ca/themostserenerepublic/
has an mp3 you can download. Check it out.

Link didn't work, but my interest is still piqued.

Weird, I had this record on and saw this thread. I just saw them open up for Stars a week ago, and they put on a show good enough to pull me away from Game 6. Very energetic and fun, and the lead singer plays trombone on several songs. And the band (some of who didn't look old enough to be in the bar otherwise) seemed very appreciative. BSS Jr. is a pretty good description.

It was ok. I'd be interested in hearing more. Though the heavy synths and drum machines reminded me more of Stars than of BSS. I did like the multiple vox with the handclaps part about 1.5 mins into the song.

Hey Polly, aren't they doing an in-store at your store tonight?

My friend Brian and I are selling some dvd's so we can make GO Train fare down for it.

That's the only mp3 they have posted on their site. But it's a pretty good indication of the album as a whole.

True dat.

They are being hailed as the next big thing because they got signed to A&C. To me they sound a lot like Death Cab for Cutie mixed with cheesy & melodramatic synths.

I'm happy for them that they're doing well. They're really green. I'm just not into their music. Definitely don't see any links to BSS beyond the label and the fact that their name feels like the next in a series of similar band names:

Broken Social Scene
The Social Register
Republic of Safety
The Most Serene Republic
etc etc etc... there's another one I'm forgetting.

Well, we got there just in time for the last half of their last song, thanks to our getting lost up around the Church & Carlton area.

However, to make up for it, I purchased an album by some band called Marlowe. I hear they're good, though the girl working cash had never heard of them.

Wait, a Canadian band's gear got stolen in Canada? That really is a trend.
