Yes, I know, it's a half year away, but here me out. Every year, I make myself a promise that I will NOT spend another boring NYE here at home. Most of my friends don't really do or go anywhere (except maybe Dri). I'd like to go somewhere fun, preferably out of the country.

Scotland has Hogmanay which is quite enticing. But since I've already been there this year, I'm kinda steering for somplace different.

Travelling alone is another factor I need to take into consideration. Cuz if you're going somewhere far and have no one to share the festivities with, it might be a moot point. Then again (this is me talking aloud), I am a friendly type and can make friends just about anywhere.

Have any of you spent NYE outside of the US? Have any recommendations?

I can't believe that in a huge city like LA you can't find anything fun to do on NYE. But it you're set on getting out of town I'm sure there are many obners who would be willing to host you. You have an open invitation to come to Calgary, you know, although it might be a little cold for you that time of year.

If you make it to Calgary, I may have to join you all. It's a mere 5 hours away.

Go to Egypt and hit the pyramids for New Year's. Pink Floyd'll probably be there. Well, isn't that the rumor every year? Hey, who knows, after Live8, it actually seems only "ridiculously unlikely" rather than "ludicrously unlikely."

When I was 9 we were coming home from Hawaii on New Years Eve. Nothing is more deafening than a 747 full of people with noisemakers.

Ohhh sure, there are things to do in LA, but I've done 'em already. I want something different. Somwhere with ambience, different scenery, different people.

So, tell me, how does Calgary celebrate NYE? What's different there?

Probably the same as everywhere else. It all depends on who you're with.

Well, I don't wish to be the third wheel if I'm gonna be with a couple. That pretty much sucks right there. It's much more fun with a group of people who are of like mind and don't wanna go home straight after it strikes midnight (another problem here in LA).

Calgary sounds like a fine option, but you guys need to entice me (as if you weren't enticement enough). Why should I spend NYE there? What sort of festivities occur?

Yeah, tell me too. I was actually there in the airport on Friday but I've only been in the city once as a stopover while heading to Banff. What's the usual deal for NYE? I've got some good friends in Calgary that I'm due to visit now that I'm so close, so I'll be scoping the place out for future festivities (and possible future relocation if things don't work here in the prairie town).

Don't go to India. I don't understand why so many folks want to go to such a dirty, diseased, overcrowded hellhole.

I've been there twice for family crap, and it was a drag. O.k., yeah, I'm probably biased because they tried to arrange a wedding for me while I was there, and the only reason I escaped was a bout with typhoid fever.

Well, whatever. Tania, why don't you take a cruise somewhere? I don't think they run a cruise to alaska at that time of year, but if they did, i bet the northern lights would be poppin.

Oh god...a cruise?! And be stuck with old people? HELLLLL NO! I'd probably throw myself overboard, after I've gazed at the northern lights.

Wait...northern lights...hmmm. A Scandinavian country. How far south can one view the aurora borealis? Say, like Prague?

I haven't figured where I want to go for NYE this year, but I know I sure as hell don't want to be in LA!
