i didn't look at all the pictures, but it must have been near to see floyd, and the whole mccartney/u2 thing was well placed and must have gotten a raucous response. the whole thing was just a caricature of itself stateside, what with the terrible mtv coverage that wouldn't show any actual music and probably ran ads for things like "pimp my ride" which are the exact antithesis (sp) of what this thing was all about

BBC1 coverage pretty great w/ shows from other cities inbetween the London acts. Wish they would have shown more Canada, though

Highlights from what I saw, mostly after 6 PM:
- Pink Floyd. Awesome.
- Annie Lennox ("Sweet Dreams")
- Sting ("Message in a Bottle")
- Robbie Williams opening his set by channeling Freddie Mercury
- Some comedian making a total ass of himself before introducing the Who
- Don Cheadle introducing Bon Jovi in Philly
- The backstage interview with Velvet Revolver. Hooray for no censors!

I taped the entire thing while I was out, but when it came time to actually watch it, I found myself fast forwarding past practically everything.

The only thing that I stoped and paid attention to was Floyd. Unless you just don't like 'em for whatever reason I can't see how you can complain about their performance. Of course, I yelled at the tv screen when Comfortably Numb was interrupted.

As has been said already, coverage here was horrible and what is the deal with the lame acts for the Philly show? It was the same thing in '85.

Steve

First thought was "Hmm, Philly doesn't look so bad!" D'oh!

And that huge troll blocking your view was Senator Loog with a wig, I'm 99% sure. Can't believe you missed Floyd. I saw a clip on tv of Comfortably Numb... Roger sounded so-so, David was spot-on perfect as usual. Overall just excellent. Those know what the fuck they're doing.

Very nice work, G. Much appreciated!

Live 8 stars to get $4,000 goodie bags
AP - Live 8 performers are playing for free, but local organisers plan to shower the celebrities with a Hugo Boss duffel bag loaded with high-fashion trinkets valued at about $4,000

They'll also be able to add to their goodie bags with big-ticket items including Hugo Boss suits, valued at $1,000 to $1,310 each; XM satellite radios and subscriptions, $655; Gibson guitars, $2,600; Bertolucci watches, valued between $2,000 and $7,900; and other items.

In all, a celebrity could walk away with a bag of gifts worth as much as $15,700 "We want this to be a thank-you to the celebrities who are giving up their time and energies," said Nicole Cashman, whose firm was tapped by Larry Magid's Electric Factory Concerts to put the bags together.

One ethicist said it was peculiar that the rich gifts are being offered at a concert whose aim is bringing attention to poverty in Africa.

"It's not unethical, but it falls into the middle gray zone," Loyola Marymount University business and ethics professor Thomas White told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "Because on one hand the motivation is to help other people, while on the other hand the motivation is to help yourself, and that doesn't seem to go hand in hand."

Another ethics expert said he wonders why the companies who donated the gifts wouldn't just give the money to charity.

"There is nothing stopping the businesses from taking a stand, saying, 'No, we are going to take this money, and we are going to give it to the charity,"' said Rushworth M. Kidder, president of the Institute for Global Ethics in Camden, Maine.

The only thing I saw was Madonna which was awful, but at least the crowd was into it.

I'm kinda pissed off it didn't occur to me to go to the G8 protestor riots in Edinburgh.

Not to do any rioting myself (far to energetic for me) or anything, more just sit back and laugh and occassionally duck as a tear gas canister flow over head or whatever.

I mean it's not everday Anarchists are battling with Police an hour from your home. Definately a spurned opportunity.

I probably won't see a charging Police horse now until the soccer season starts!

Loved the pictures, made me laugh, and I had a thought:
maybe Geldof should require that any musician who wishes to play should have to pay a million to the effort, as well as play. "Good evening Hyde Park, We're here to save the world!"...really, back it up with a check*
*Sting and Bono, natch, would be excluded from this requirement, as they obviously have contibuted enough.

I totally missed most of the coverage because we were having a cookout at our place on the same day. I saw the "highlight" show on ABC, which was worthless. Does anyone know if there's streaming video of Floyd's entire set?

Love the pics... your captions sound exactly like what I would have been saying in my own head!

After viewing those pictures I had a couple thoughts:

1. Why does anybody go to these wretched events?
2. WTF is with all the litter?
3. My hatred for humans just took another giant step forward.
