This is from David Bowie's website (he uses the nickname "sailor")

http://www.davidbowie.com/news/index.php?id=20041124

THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO SAY.

'THE ARCADE FIRE' HAVE THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR.

You must, simply must, buy it now, today, pronto. Quite the most beautiful, moving and passionate piece of brilliant song-writing and quirky performance I've heard in YONKS !!!

It's called 'FUNERAL' (Merge Records) and nothing else (and yes, I've heard the new U2) comes close.

(Well, maybe 'Secret Machines' and their CD 'Now Here Is Nowhere)

OK, OK, . .. I'm doing my diary about them both and some others, a sort of year end round up.

Says it right there next to his name.

In other news, Bowie named himself "obsolete" and admitted that "Funeral" and "Now Here is Nowhere" were the "only albums [he's] heard this year," and he's really only "heard of the Secret Machines album."

DrJimmy - just a little gentle ribbing. You and your love for the Arcade Fire are welcome within these hallowed halls. Street teamer is just the lowest rank here - the more you post, the more elevated your denigration.

Well then, let's put Bowie's comment into some perspective. Throughout his career, Bowie has picked his spots to champion some "hip" underground band in order to boost his own artistic cred (a tactic also used by Robert Plant). So Bowie saying he likes Funeral doesn't necessarily mean it's a good album (or even that he's listened to it), it just means it's what the kids are buzzing about these days.

Just sayin' (and I don't mean to imply it isn't a good album - I still haven't heard it).

You really think championing Arcade Fire boosts Bowie's artistic cred? No matter what anyone thinks of his recent albums, Bowie is still huge.

Arcade Fire is tiny, tiny, tiny in comparison. Bowie has nothing to gain or lose by mentioning them. Like most musicians, he's a music fan.

Am I in the minority here if I say that Bowie's music is still appealing and relevant? I hope not, the man has good taste...and instincts.

This whole "rocks stars championing bands I know" is starting to get really spooky.

Morrissey's manager apparently told the Dears: "Welcome to the family". and now this... it's insane! (insane in a rily rily good way).

Your skepticism bugs the fuck out of me. One of my best friends is just like you in that respect. He's skeptical of everything. Damn. It just gets old.

Ok... Got it off my chest.

So, Doubting Thomas, if you want, you can take Funeral from me on clevercactus or SoulSeek so you can form an actual opinion rather than relying on your steady stream of doubt.

np: Dungen - "Det de Tanker Idag Ar d I Morgon"

Even if I set aside my skepticism, I'd still dig deep and find something else that bugs the fuck out of you.

Probably right. I'm easily annoyed.

You should give it a listen, that's all I'm saying. I'm not promising that you'll love it. I don't think it's a polarizing release either like, say, cLOUDDEAD. It's got a few songs that are irresistable and hooky as hell.

It's a pretty killer psych-pop record. Sounds like it was made in the late 60s. Dungen is one guy. Pretty fucking remarkable when you hear it. The guy is immensly talented.
