Tell your friends to bring ipods, and give them each a half hour-hour to "spin". It'll be way cheaper, way more fun, and the music will be hopefully much more kick ass.

see, i thought that too, or just one ipod. but we wanted it to be put in the hands of one dude, one dj, and not have to worry about it. and her old man is paying for it, and wants a dj, so there you go.
i assume that since you're paying them, you have some say on what they do and don't play? i have zero experience w/ this sort of thing.

yeah, that's correct. i'm spinning at a reception for an ex's best friend in the near future and i've already been given a list of what must and mustn't be played, but i pretty much have free reign other than what's on the list. then again, she asked me to do it because she's been to my nights and has apparently enjoyed them immensely. to be safe, just make up a list.

is it common place to give them music that they don't have on their list? or is that a slap in the face

Yes, it is commonplace. No, it is certainly not a slap in the face.

Oh duude, we hired this awesome company from the city for ours. They're a kinda indie rock company(meaning that they have a clue about music that's cool and good but will play ANYTHING) that has an extensive do not play list, plays what you want and when you want it played basically, and it rocked so much that the bartender at our reception cornered me and told me that our reception was the best he'd ever worked at the club.

Crap, I can't remember their name now but I'll look it up if interested. They were also damn reasonable price wise.
