i'm cruising a long yesterday, i'm about 20km out from finishing a century i was riding with a friend. i'm in a bike lane pulling past a car that's on my left - she immediately makes a sharp right hand turn in front of me to pull into a parking spot. having no time to stop i eat it into the side of the car, slide across the hood and hit the pavement with my chin. so, i'm gonna say it again - please, please, please wear a helmet if your out there riding in traffic. i came out of it fairly unscathed - 7 stiches and some tape to seal up the massive hole in my chin but it could've been a lot worse. be careful out there.

hehe - well, the cop that showed up was a total prick and was really laying into here. when he took my statement it seemed like he wanted to charge her. unforunately they hauled me off in an ambulance before i got to see what happened.

So, why exactly weren't you wearing your helmet? And I'd think you'd learn your lesson from the previous time -- didn't you lose teeth then?

PS -- I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt, but...SHEESH! Be careful, dammit.

i think that the point is that this incident didn't go more poorly because he was wearing a helmet.

How could he possibly know that if he was wearing a helmet? He may have been better off without one for all we know.

Would a heavy beard have provided some protection?

Not much a helmet can do for a chin...

yes, i was wearing a helmet. the point is it probably would've been a lot worse had i not had one on. i do wear a full face for mountain biking to keep my teeth inside my head. unfortunately it's too bloody hot for road riding.

i was wearing a helmet that time as well - though only a half shell, the front of my head was saved but my face still took most of the damage. i think the lesson there was don't ride off 4 foot cement drops with no speed.

man i can't stress this enough. PROTECT YA HEAD! i was playing soccer yesterday and (apparently!) had a minor (or major) concussion. now i vaguely remember going for a keeper-clearence high ball header and possibly the other dudes head + ball colliding with mine (possibly throwing my head off balance during impact), but the freakiest thing was i was still standing (dint pass out or nothing), but i lost all memory of that whole morning right there afterwards. (apparently) next minute i am just straddling off the pitch like a walk in the palk (while the game went on) towards the coach and asking questions such as "what i am doing here?!" and "what day is it?" OHSHIT. cus nobody saw a major incident everbody was freaked out. just before been taken to the hospital, i was pinchin myself all the time like not knowing how the fuck i got to the game, IS THIS A DREAM?, remembering weird flashbacks, trippin out, was my drink spiked last night? couldn't remember the month of the year even. then while waiting in the hospital slowly tried to track back the events of the morning and eventually (but with great difficulty) started to put the pieces together of the 3-4 hours leading up the event. sortta like in momento. then moments (lol) later i was lying in the bed waiting for a brain scan with two chums and they were mentioning some of my favorite things and we were plannin my funeral with strippers (one for each nationality). it was hilarious.

Man, I want to be concussed like that. Soccer can be so dreamy.

Me, I've had too many close calls of late. I'm only still learning my way around on this longboard, and while relatively confident, I'd stand no chance against any moving vehicle that came too close.

I just bought my first bike helmet last week. The kids were (rightly) accusing my of being a hypocrit by making them wear their helmets while I biked alongside ballcapped.
