Ok, so I never actually heard any of their songs until a few months ago. I was driving home from the mall and heard "Wonderwall" for the first time on the radio and thought it was amazing. It was one of those top-40 stations so they didn't say who it was by, so I typed a few of the lyrics into google when I got home and was shocked to see that it was by Oasis!

All of my life I never heard anyone say anything positive about this band so I never bothered to check them out. Well, I went to the store and bought (What's The Story) Morning Glory? and wow, I liked pretty much all of it, a lot! No substance, but lots of ear candy! Just what I need after listening to some Sonic Youth. :)

I downloaded some tracks from Definitely Maybe and Be Here Now, preferred the latter and bought it earlier today when I picked up the new U2. Standing on the Shoulder of Giants didn't quite make an impact on me and I didn't even bother with Heathen Chemistry yet.

So are there any Oasis fans around? If so, do you recommand The Masterplan? The singer from the Killers in a recent CMJ magazine said it was one of his favorite records ever, so I'm pretty interested in it.

I have been known to argue that (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

is the best album of the 90s..I know I'm wrong, but what else is there?

ala me love early OASIS

It is one of my favorite albums of the 90s. I don't know. It really had an affect on music then. Cobain died, Oasis took the music scene overseas and here. Even if they aren't the best band of that Brit Pop scene (Blur and Pulp ARE both better)...I think their songs are like really anthemic. And I don't know. I <3 them.

Really, perhaps the band I have the least amount of respect for. I saw them open for Neil Young at a small festy that he headlined (w/ Jewel, Gin Blossoms), and they treated the audience with such smug contempt: verbal abuse, and, truly a crappy crappy set. How can you possibly do that to the stage you're about to hand over to Neil Young????

That and they're some whiney, talentless motherfuckers, says me.

Well they have been known to get really drunk and no one ever said they weren't assholes (specifically, as is well documented: Liam)...but I mean, gah. I hate you.

I'd be whiny too if I had to share a stage with the Gin Blossoms and Jewel. And if I had to listen to Neil Young sing. Maybe if...nah...what's the use?

I've had the unique pleasure of actually seeing a very gracious Oasis onstage (twice). No whining involved. No abuse. Amicable chat between the brothers. I was very pleasantly surprised.

They've got some good singles. I have Morning Glory, and it's a damned fine album. Though I gotta admit, it reminds me of 7th grade. Sorry to make some of you feel old.

They're a great singles band, with an annoying tendency to drag out their songs a minute or two longer than they should.

(That's part of why they're a great singles band--the singles get edited down to 4 minutes!)

Definitely Maybe > Morning Glory.

Although Morning Glory has the songs "Dont Look Back in Anger" and "Morning Glory"

But "Live Forever" is my favorite Oasis song. Plus they got "Cigarettes and Alcohol" and "Rock n Roll Star" on that album. Dayumn

How could you hae not heard 'Wonderwall' before...??

Even the most indie snobbish of music fans know that song?

1st two records = unfukwitable.
next 2-3 = 3-4 great tracks per album with mucho filler. IMO

I like one song by them. "Where Did It All Go Wrong"

Everything else should be shot out the cannon of ass.

I like Live Forever, and Definitely Maybe is an o.k. album at best.

But seriously, what original musical thoughts do they have? I don't mind hero worship, but when you believe you've surpassed those heroes when all you've done is rip them off... that's weak.

In 50 years, people will still listen to Beatles albums, and have forgotten about Oasis.

And as for better albums of the 90's, I'd like to leave you with a few.

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk
The Grays - RoShamBo
Fiona Apple - When the Pawn
Stereophonics - Word Gets Around
Pulp - Different Class
Rialto - S/T

I honestly have no idea, and it's not as if I've been avoiding pop/rock stations all these years either. At least before I became a Verve fan earlier this year I heard "Bittersweet Symphony" when it was first released as a single even if I didn't know the band that performed the song. But with Oasis, it took them 10 years to reach my ears for the first time.

The 'Indie Set' only treated Oasis with disdain after they became massively successful. Surprise, surprise.

Their first two albums are really good. No one's saying they were innovative or will be a lasting influence on a generation of songwriters, but how many bands do that? It just sounds good.

And I love the Gallaghers. They did lots of drugs, had fights, married floozy pop stars and generally acted like proper rock stars instead of the terminally dull 'cool' musicians "that don't want to be cliches". Fuck that!
