You will notice a "Charts" link on your menubar all of a sudden.

This is a new place where we can rate albums on a 1-10 scale for fun and learning. Anyone registered user can add an album*, and rate any album in the system. You can search (and eventually you will be able to sort), and view lists of what albums a user has rated, what users have rated an album, and so forth. It will be great fun.

The system is decidedly undertested, and I'm relying on your goodwill 1) to report bugs to me, and 2) not to try too hard to break it.

As always, recommendations for improvement are welcome, but keep in mind that I've got plenty in mind, I just wanted to get this out the door and see what everyone thought.

* PLEASE punctuate correctly when you add an album, and pick the applicable artist from the drop-down if it's there - duplicates will be a pain in my ass. If you're not sure whether an album is already in the system, do a quick search by artist or album (* works as a wildcard). But don't be shy - the more people we have adding albums, the faster this will become useful.

This is a pretty cool idea, nice to see how this compares to year end lists etc. Im adding 05 albums now.

Might be a good idea if you kept to only 2 decimal places or so, cos one of those albums is like 8.333333333333...

Oh yeah, i meant to address that. Leave the album field blank and I'll code something in.

What would be a less-confusing layout for the Artist and Album names? I was thinking it might be better to switch the two columns and left-align the contents. Ya think?

Artist column should be before album

When adding from the drop down list, can you make the entrys alphabetical. They're sorted by date added right now I think.

This is a good idea but inevitably (as I know from a similar proposal last year) it has a few problems.

Say for instance my favourite album of the year is Edgar 'Jones' Jones. I would probably give it give it a 9. If not a single other person voted for it, it would still remain near the top as "Obner's favourite album" despite perhaps only one person even hearing the album.

Also it would only take one person to give a melodramtic vote of 1 or 2 to an album to completely wreck it's score. Example - four people score 'Doolittle' with 8's giving it an average of....um....8 and then Mr (or Mrs) "I Hate The Pixies" comes along gives it 1 and it's average mark goes way down to a 5.


Maybe I take these things to seriously....

You can filter so only those with above 5 votes/10 votes etc. show up

Also if you click the album name, you can see who voted what, so you can see which cunt gave the pixies 1.

It is possible to have more albums on the first page? It seems to me anything not on the first page is going to be abandoned and forgotten about pretty quickly.

Suggestion: It would help if we could add our rating during the add new album process, so we don't have to go find it afterwards.

Sort the existing artist list on the add new screen
filter to only display albums you haven't rated yet

I'm going to go put up the new Brendan Benson which has really grown on me. The first 4 songs on that album are some of the best power pop put out this year IMO.
