I read tons of music magazines, and I always get intrigued by reviews who mention 'alt-country'. I always love what i read, and write down the bands name, and go online later to check them out..

i rarely like what i hear....

reviewers, stop toying with me!!!

Uncle Tupelo, earlier Wilco, Old 97s, Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams, Lucero, Tift Merritt, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Lucinda Williams...that stuff doesn't intrigue you?

THE alt. country label. Along with Lost Highway, I guess.

then i play every availabel sound clip, and it loses me... as much as the reviews get me excited.

Pop and most rap and R&B. I love synth pop, I love euro pop, I love most techno/trance, I love trip hop, I love soul, I love jazz, I love world music. Hell I listen to worship music and most Christian bubblegum junk. But I hate true pop and true R&B. I know it's crap but I know everything else I listen to is as well so I don't think that's it.

It confounds me.

However I do feel Telefon Tel Aviv's "Nothing is Worth Losing That" is an incredible song and it's very R&B-ish.

If you could turn me on to some similar artists maybe my view will change. They have to be mainstream as F*CK though or it won't be true.

hardcore. i mean i like noisy stuff (lightning bolt, wolf eyes, etc.) but i just have no use whatsoever for hardcore. "we're gonna push our beliefs on you and if you don't like it we'll give you a beatdown".

You forgot Riviera. ;) But then again they're more " Americana" then alt-country.

I love all of the above but I can't get into Kelly Hogan though many others I know love her. I also like Neko Case but don't always like her solo material.

Genre I've tried but don't like? Punk from any time period of all forms. Can't get into it at all. I try and try but it does nothing for me.

Went and saw Wire last year and though it was a good show it did nada for me.

I don't think I have found an entire genre that I don't enjoy a little bit of.

Do you have "Making Singles, Driking Doubles"? It is the 100th release from Bloodshot, I think. Pretty good sampler of most of these folks. I'm sure you would love it.

I could never bring myself to buy a contemporary country album. You know, stuff like Toby Keith. And I've found that people who are really into that stuff pretty much only listen to that kind of music.

But then again, I don't really want to like pop-country anyway, so I'll have to think of something else.

There's plenty of mainstream genres that I find mostly unbearable - modern country pop, adult contemporary singer-songwriter to name two, but generally there are artists in those genre who are exceptions to the "not interested" rule.

But, by and large, except for isolated artists here and there, I find screamo (screamcore, hardcore emo, whatever) to be utterly ridiculous no matter how hard I try to like it.

I have a giant blind spot for reggae. Slap a reggae beat on just about anything and I'm a-snoozin'. Don't know why.

I don't think I appreciate jazz enough. I really do try but it's just not jibing yet and I think I'm missing out.

Every genre is 90% crap, 10% great. The trick is finding the good 10%.

There are only two things in this world that I hate. One of them is reggae music. The other is the Subway Subs but the first is reggae. I always mean to start at thread where people list off some reggae that they think I wouldn't hate. some day...

I'll just say...ah, well, you can't like everything (wanders off to find a Black Uhuru album).

Yeh, that's probably mine. I don't mind some acoustic blues, a little country blues, or even ancient pre-Elvis blues, but as soon as that shit gets electrified (B.B. King, Albert King, Joe Louis Walker, John Mayall, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robert Cray, etc.) I cup my ears and run. Subsequently, I also don't like heavy metal 'cuz it's mostly blooze-based.

But then again, I don't spend any time wishing I liked that stuff. I do sometimes wish I liked this nebulous genre called indie, however. And normally I'd be first to say indie can't be defined as any one sound, that it's a term meant to cover an infinite range of independent artists (just like the word alternative two decades ago), but the fact of the matter is that indie is becoming a particular sound. It's still hard (or too early) to articulate exactly what that sound is, but a certain uniformity is apparent to anyone with a mild aptitude for pattern recognition.

Y'know that dorky line in Garden State about how the Shins will change your life? That's the sound of indie - not the Shins song in and of itself, but that specific line leading into that specific song. That's the sound of a movement being codified; the sound of a trend steeling itself into a shape. And I don't like that sound. But the perennial outcast in me sorta wishes I did.

I like a little bit of everything and was coming up short on a pick until I saw screamo. That's the one I don't get. I've listened to a bunch and it just sounds awful to me. Maybe I'm getting to old to appreciate some sub-types, because I'm still plenty pissed off most of the time, so it ain't an anger thing.

Yeah.

I don't think I've found that 10% yet (for me) when it comes to reggae. It's definitely not Bob Marley though maybe I could appreciate him one day if I can get into some other stuff. I should probably check out Black Uhuru and Jimmy Cliff, but it's a low priority for me. I have a feeling I may like some classic dub better, but I haven't really tried with that one, either, since I haven't like most of what I've heard.

I also don't like classic country, blues and hip-hop quite as much as I'd like to although I certainly like a few artists and albums from each.
