to go off the website list (I refused) for Portland

Nicholas' Restaurant
318 SE Grand Ave, Portland, OR
Where shabby isn't chic, but the prices let you nosh it up for pennies.

adding to boston:

emma's -- hampshire st., kendall sq, cambridge
great pizza place to get your pizza on. my favorite is the one with rosemary tomato sauce, sweet potatos, spinach, carmelized onions, goronzola

grendel's -- jfk st., harvard sq, cambridge
food isn't amazing but everything is $2 during "happy hour"

just about anything in chinatown -- especially dim sum and those vietnamese "sandwiches" that taste like a bowl of pho on a sub roll

as for the stuff shiv posted, pho pasteur is awesome, so is anna's taquaria--thoough i like boca grande burritos (coolidge corner in brookline and porter sq. in cambridge) much more.

c.

Adding to the L.A. list:

asahi ramen - on sawtelle - your place for heaping bowls of yummy ramen or mabo rice (giant plate of rice covered in tofu with ground pork)

jitlada - sunset in thaitown - best thai in town. unbelievably good in fact.

urth cafe - melrose, beverly or venice - stellar organic soups, salads and sandwiches... mean desserts and great tea selection. bravo!

cafe angelino - third st. - the best real deal italian (read: thin pizza that has a similar effect to crack rock).

toast - third st. - breakfast to friggin die for.

trust me all these are ace. you won't be disappointed.

I always LOVED Montage when I lived near PDX :) Is it still as good as it used to be? Don't know of many other places in the NW to get Rabbit or Gator Jambalaya :)

1. Cafe Maspero
601 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA
(oldbulees says - this place is good, but a lil overrated. good pastrami)

2. Cafe du Monde
800 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA
This French Quarter staple serves up steaming cafe au lait and crispy beignets (square doughnuts) 'round the clock.
(oldbulee says - what's not to like? )

3. Camellia Grill
626 S Carrollton Ave, New Orleans, LA
Inexpensive diner standards complement the local characters and color at this late-night New Orleans favorite.
(oldbulee says - inexpensive my ass. it's the most expensive diner I've ever been to, but the western omelet owns. good food but not cheap for diner food.)

4. Mother's Restaurant
401 Poydras St, New Orleans, LA
The perfect po' boy is worth the wait at this cafeteria-style deli.
(oldbulee says - local place turned tourist. still good though.)

5. Mo's Pizza
1112 Ave H, Westwego, LA
(never eaten)

6. Trolley Stop
1923 Saint Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA
(oldbulee says - poor man's Camellia Grill. Cheap but not very good. Okay especially if you're hammered. It's right next door to the Camellia Grill and it serves the same type food. So if you have 15 bucks left after going out, go to Camellia Grill. If all you have is a 5, hit the Trolley Stop.)

7. Port of Call
838 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA
This rustic neighborhood institution has a whale of a burger.
(oldbulee says - never been but have heard good things from trusted people)

8. Juan's Flying Burrito
2018 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA
Boffo burritos made to order in punk den.
never been

9. Johnny's Po-boys
511 Saint Louis St, New Orleans, LA
never been

10. Dunbar's Creole Cooking
4927 Freret St, New Orleans, LA
Unassuming dining spot sets higher standard for Creole comfort food
never been

I dunno if Acme is cheap, per se, but GOTDAMN its good. Oyster shooters and Bloody Mary's for Breakfast? Yes, that'd be the monger way.

The ATL list is fairly gar considering they have 3 chain places on there, but damn if I didn't almost eat Fat Matt's last night. The main deciding factor against was that I was too lazy to leave the house.

Acme is awesome, and it's priced pretty decent for the kind of food.

Maspero does have good pastrami, but how the fuck could they leave off the Lucky Dog?

Adding on myself:

Any of the Sushi Mac restaurants (Culver, SMonica, Valley) are good for cheap sushi on the go - I frequent the culver(ish) spot about once a week...

Abbot-Kinney = best Pizza in L.A. Seriously. locations in SMonica on Pico (near SMCC) and the orig. in Venice

I have multiple friends that swear by Apple Pan - I like the pie but, since I'm not much for meat, I can't vouch for it myself...

My current obsession = India Sweets and Spices on Venice Blvd. Amazing Indian food served cheap, counter-style tucked inside a small convenience store on Venice east of Overland...

and, for the CHEAP, good, on-the-go Mexican food, the best place (with, coincidentaly, some of the worst atmosphere), is La Paeita (sp?) on Lincoln..

I'll add...

Spike's Junkyard Dogs
Really good hot dogs in an assload of varieties. I like the pizza dog.
Another place just opened down the street called Beantown Dogs. My roommate said they were pretty good and their rolls were buttered and toasted.

edit: i really wanna try speed's hot dogs.
