Bands fall into two catergories.

You've got your Joe Dimaggio bands that know when to call it quits and don't fuck up their legacy with a endless bunch of shitty albums.**

Then you've got your Willie Mays bands that just stay around too damn long, releasing crappy album after crappy album long after they peaked out.

I'm more interested in the former catergory. What bands ended on a high note? Doesn't have to be an all time classic, just an album that finished things off "nicely." Also, please only bands that released at least 3 proper albums and made a conscious choice to quit. Don't give me any bands that quit because of circumstances that were out of their control.

Here's a few I though of:
Afghan Whigs-1965
Beatles-Abbey Road(yeah, yeah, I'm counting this as their last not Let It Be)
Dramarama-Hi-Fi Sci-Fi
Faith No More-Album of the Year
Husker Du-Warehouse
James-Pleased To Meet You
Pixies-Trompe Le Monde
Screaming Trees-Dust
Verve-Urban Hmyns

Tell me what you think.

**Okay, maybe Joe D. stayed 1 season too long, but you get my point.

I probably should have called it quits on this board back in October.

I say The Replacements, though more than a few would disagree. Don't Tell A Soul does sound dated, and it isn't their strongest output, but there are some redeeming tracks there. Also, even though the whole band only got together for one song on All Shook Down, it's still an album I really enjoy. It also shows quite a transformationand maturation since Sorry Ma….

Pixies and Faith No More seconded. I saw the Album Of The Year tour, and it was indeed a high note to end on. Patton was just so good.

I'm pretty sure that once Booth quit, the band said they would continue without him, but then thought better of it.

I immediately thought of MBV, even though Kevin Shields apparently tried to follow it up, but eventually gave up thankfully.

I pretend Guns n' Roses did that as well. Everything just ended in 1991, just like Loveless.

I always though this was pretty average. Production is bad, and too much filler. Not a terrible album, but not great.

I'd say:
Guided By Voices (but by a hair)
Pavement
Big Star (although they were pretty much forced out by circumstance and "The Market")

I think they should've quite after "Stuck In Wonderamaland". The major label deal hurt them a lot.

Also, I don't think the VU conciously decided to dissolve. Willie Alexander was slated to replace Lou, but it fizzled.

Boo Radleys - Kingsize

Some people slag on it, but I think it's a damn good pop record. Damn good.

How about At The Drive-In? People seem pretty pleased with how that turned out.

Another good one is a band that probably none of you have heard of, but they're one of my favorites : The Dragons ( from San Diego ) . They basically quit because they were getting too old for the style of music they played ( full-on, punkish rock 'n' roll ) . They never let it get to the point of embarrassment.

Amen.

I read the Pixies are thinking about recording again. Would this negate them knowing when to call it quits?
