Background information: I'm recording some music with my quasi-reformed band, and I'm attempting to design a cover for the CD.

According to my drummer, CD's that feature pictures of the artist on the cover outsell CD's that have unrelated artwork. I'm not convinced of the truth of this statement, and I'm not sold on the idea either, but I'm curious if fellow Obnerites could recommend their favorite album artwork which includes a picture of the artist.

For what it is worth, I'll nominate the Replacements "Let It Be."

Thanks for your help.

Cotton, you hit the nail on the head with that Man-O-War album. I think that will be the look we are going for. Thank God for my uber-physique.

Since I didn't see that Let It Be had already been mentioned in the first damn post...

And the rabbit pelts you casually don. Your pleather banana hammock should be all the rage by the time SB releases its full-length, I'm guessing.

It appears that B/W photography ought to be the way to go.

Well, except for that Stryken thing......

Actually, it's probably best they didn't do that one in full color.

The real question here is, at what point, or under the influence of what substances does one start to think that an album cover ala Dirty Work, Stryen or Man O War is a good idea.

Seriously, is there an A&R guy or whatever, or an art director sitting there going "I know, RONNIE, where you all FUSCHIA SUIT!! It''s be tops" or "We'll dress you up like uber gay robots, and use lots of hair spray, it's like KISS meets Poison!!" or "Wow, you guys are pretty beefy, if we dress you up in fur and thongs, we'll get that elusive Playgirl demographic."

Anyone have a salient theory on this matter?

Inspired by the Man-o-war album cover, I did some research on AMG.

Interesting fact: the album "Anthology" came out in 1997 (granted, it's a compilation of their, um, hits from the 80's, but that album design is only eight years old).

Some of their song titles:

Metal Warriors
Metal Daze
Kings of Metal
Gloves of Metal
Brothers of Metal, Part 1
Death Tone
Bridge of Death
Revelation (Death's Angel)
March For Revenge (By the Soldiers of Death)
Army of the Immortals
Holy War
Violence and Bloodshed
Blood of My Enemies
Blood of the Kings
King
Hail and Kill
Kill With Power
Sign of the Hammer
Drums of Doom
Wheels of Fire
Heart of Steel
The Power of Thy Sword
Return of the Warlords
Black Wind, Fire and Steel

It's like they are working with a language of only fifty words or so.

I mean, duh? but still...that explains Ronnie's fuschia suit, and the yellow pants on Mick, but NOTHING explains the gay robots.

It was called the 80's, Loog.

Steve

edit:Yeah, I believe the Manowar cover was from the 90's, but I'd be willing to bet that picture was taken in the 80's
