As found in a review of the Rob Dickinson show here:

(courtesy the writer of the review, not Chrome_CW) I'll be buying copies for friends, maybe even two for myself

Do people really do this? I see people say this all the time, but I've certainly never known any of these generous people who pick up multiple copies of albums to pass out. I've never even known anyone who picked up a second copy to keep in their car or at work, or wherever they like to hang out that they wouldn't ever want to be without this particular album. Me, I'd just tell my friends about it, give them a copy of a song, or even the whole thing, and hope they get interested enough to invest in something of theirs. I'd rather spend the extra money on more new music for ME. Selfish? Maybe. Practical? YES.

The closest I came was that I got a free promo of Okkervil River's "Black Sheep Boy" when I had ordered a copy, so I have that copy to my brother.

It's not uncommon for me to pick up for friends on a number of different things, be it a cd, some beer, lunch, or something at the store. If the price is under $30, chances are I'm not gonna collect. If your friend ain't worth that little bit of money every now and again, then they ain't a friend. It will come back around.

I also think it's a sin to charge at the door for a party. At our old house, we had an old glass water cooler jug with coins and a few bills in it: The Beer Fund. We'd throw a party, but a couple kegs of beer and some booze and food and shit, but no charge for cups or anything. If anyone asked, we always let them know that donations to the Beer Fund were welcome and appreciated.

I musta handed out about half-a-dozen copies of Garbage's first album before they started to slaughter with "Stupid Girl" (or whatever the biggest hit was off that album -- they were all big to me) -- mostly "targeted" at people with pop/rock tastes.

I also gave out several copies of In The Nursery's Hindle Wakes to people with more "universal" tastes in music.
