I'm suddenly going to find myself in New York tomorrow night for the weekend. I've only ever spent like 12 hours in Brooklyn. We're staying in Manhattan. I'll probably go to the Siren Fest. Otherwise, I want to know some other places to check out, less so for sight-seeing, more so for interest: book stores, record stores, restaurants, places to buy pants, etc. Basically, I want to know a couple of your favourite spots that might not be obvious to someone lost in that city. All details are encouraged.

Pop my cherry.

nother pupular book stop is the STRAND. there are 3 of em.. the one near me is on 12th and Broadway....

which is also right near St. Marks where you'll find a slew of record stores, and odd ball shops....

I hate strand. It's always so crowded, and the aisles are narrow as it is. But it's definitely a good place to find popular new books used.

its probably because you arent from NY and with your midwestern decency dont assume a stance in the aisle that defies someone to try and walk past you.. poor kid;)

seriously though, not just that popular crap..but you can find tons of OoP or hard to time items at really good prices.. and their art/photography sections are unfuckwithable

The KGB Bar (east 4th?) used to be cool, dunno if it's still there. The Scratcher is always a great place for pints (buy-back rule always in effect).

academy records on 18th street between 5th ave and 6th ave. closer to 5th ave. i think it's on the south side of the street. great finds. fish through the cd sections and you'll find gems. found joy division for 6 bucks! found oodles and oodles of cds, and they are used, so they are cheap!

also have a huge jazz section. a bit more expensive, but plenty to look at if you have the time.

Wherever you decide to go, make sure you know how to get there in advance. New Yorkers love fuckin with tourists.

tourists in time square annoy the piss out of me. they just stand in the middle of the sidewalk going "uh what should we do? where should we go?" move out of the damn way, step to the side so that you don't block up the sidewalk. that's what you need to do.

sorry, i just had to vent.

I think we might go to the Hidden Cameras show at the Bowery tomorrow. Anyone know of any better shows then?

I would also just pick up the latest New Yorker and Village Voice- that should give you enough ideas as to what you may want to experience in terms of all that "culture" and whatnot.

Ugh. I totally agree. The worst are the ones who just stand there in awe watching the goings-on at MTV, like what they're watching is so worthy. Move along people!!!!

As far as things to do, I second Academy Records, and try to make it to Other Music, near Astor Place.

It'd be a shame though to be in town and not to get to meet you.

Academy's good, but it still amazes me that it's the best nyc has to offer.

My reference was to the establishment's clientele, not location.

Cheers!

Also, if Puglia is still in Little Italy, you can't beat that for dinner, especially if Jorge is still doing the serenading.

Me too. But, when I visit for a few days I find I miss Atlanta. So, I guess, after about 5 years it has finally settled in that this is home.
