Ahh, Haq just wants to spread his midwest-cum-northeast-anti-American-liberal-guiltfest on the yutes.

And maybe find a fat young boy to take out to the park this weekend.

No biggies, right?

See, I don't have anything to feel guilty about, because I'm not a racist.

Sorry Aaron but I took your comments to be of the "who cares about harry, harry sucks" variety. Me bad.

Scottycash, yes, that's tomorrow night. I'm taking my son to it early evening. I think I'm more excited for it then he is, and he's excited. They're supposed to be re-inacting the Quiddich World Cup, which how the fuck they're going to pull that off I have no idea.

As if the Catholic church didn't have a bad enough rep, now it's newly annoited leader is going to rail against a fucking kids book about wizards. You know what he should do next? Repeal the forgiveness of Galileo.

I pre-ordered my Harry Potter book awhile ago, but I have a sneaking suspicion I won't be getting it on Saturday, which sucks.

I hate to break it to you, but christians have been against Harry Potter for a while now. The Pope is about 3 years late in joining the rest of the christians in condemning Harry Potter. It's stupid, but it's more reactionary than anything else.

That's pretty off-base. On the conservative scale from 1 (Moderate-Right) to 10 (Pat Robertson), it's maybe the 9's and up who are doing this. My mom is an very conservative Catholic and buys my little brother the HP books.

I really enjoyed this article. Bold emphasis is mine, natch.

Quote:
It's not, as one might expect, that Left Behind is Christian and Harry Potter pagan, but rather that Left Behind is Protestant and Harry Potter is Catholic. One of the chief theological arguments between Catholics and Protestants has been over whether salvation is earned through faith or by good works. In Left Behind, the only thing that matters is faith in Jesus. Steele explains that church leaders had led so many people astray because they merely "expected them to lead a good life, to do the best they could, to think of others, to be kind, to live in peace. It sounded so good, and yet it was so wrong. How far from the mark!"

While everything is pre-ordained in Left Behind, Dumbledore explicitly tells Harry that even though he carries some of the essence of Voldemort in him, he has the power to do good because he has the power of choice.

In that sense, despite their similarities, at their hearts the two series are different in a fundamental but not obvious way. Left Behind is fatalistic; Harry Potter sees outcomes determined by individual actions. Both provide a roadmap for how to live a good life, but in one case the key is morality, and in the other it is faith.

In somewhat related news Hilary Clinton came out the other day against Rockstar's GTF games.

"Children are playing a game that encourages them to have sex with prostitutes and then murder them," she said in a statement. "This is a silent epidemic of media desensitization that teaches kids it's OK to diss people because they are a woman, they're a different color or they're from a different place,"

Yes, she did use the word diss.

Yeah, Steve, I was just about to post this in neuro's GTA thread. It's funny because the yahoo article focuses primarily on the sex hack as opposed to rest of the game.

Yes! I noticed the same thing when I googled news regarding it. Some articles seemed to be saying that Hilary just had an issue with the hack while others made it appear she was coming out against violence in the games period.
