Elderly rockers the New York Dolls have put pen to paper on a new deal with metal label Roadrunner.

The band's upcoming release will be their first studio album since 1974's Too Much Too Soon. Expect a release sometime in spring 2005 (I think they meant 2006). David Bason, A&R for Roadrunner, told Billboard's website:

"Since word has spread of the band getting back into the studio to record new material, I've been inundated with calls from various high-profile producers and artists wanting to get involved. I can't reveal any names yet but it's nice to have such a vote of confidence from the artistic community out of the gate. The sound of this record will be true to form New York Dolls down and dirty rock'n'roll. I've heard sketches of the material and if it's any indication, the record will blow you away."

A quick (and possibly inaccurate) check showed that 4 people who have played with the Dolls are dead.

drummer Jerry Nolan - a stroke while in hospital for meningitis
guitarist Johnny Thunders - heroin overdose

It was never safe to be a Doll.

BTW - the Two York Dolls are playing Bumbershoot this year.

This is the worst idea I've heard in a while. Even if Thunders was alive and in the band, I'd still say it was a bad idea. As much of a Dolls/Thunders fan as I am, it's not even the New York Dolls anymore. They might as well release it under the name Johansen and Friends...at least it wouldn't do any more damage to the Dolls' legacy.
