I know mostly everyone that posts in here is not into comics, but I have to say one thing...if there is one time to start reading them, the time is now. So many fucked up things are going on in the DC universe. The JLA is breaking up due to Batman's mind being wiped out from Zantanna, the rebirth of Green Lantern, The OMAC project, and of course the infinite crisis that is soon to unfold.

There is alos the resurrection of Jason Todd (the second Robin)

Recently, Superman is being controled by something evil. I'm not sure what the fuck is going on, but the ultamite boyscout just beat the everliving shit out of Batman.

I am worried for Bamtan...but then again, i'm sure he wont die due to the other sequels lined up in the upcomming years.

DC has big plans in the not so disatant future that will change the lives of todays heros forever.

In the next issue of Wonderwoman, she squares off against Superman. I cant wait.

Sorry for all of the rambling, all of this is hitting me as i'm typing.
Here are some issued worth checking out.

I'm sure most of you wont give a shit, but here goes.

not to mention the Frank Miller/Jim Lee series and Seven Soldiers in the DCU

there's all sorts of shit goin on in the Marvel universe, but i haven't been as up on that since house of m looks like it's gonna blow. sorry bendis. the new avengers is still pretty sweet. and Powers is still a fucking great book.

also, alan moore's Albion and that Top Ten prequel thingy, and supposedly more Terra Obscura stuff.

i never read the superman stuff so i'm curious as to wht all that's about.

The Superman issues have been excellent.
I'm not a big fan of Marvel, but I am really interested in House Of M.
I got them all last week but have not read them, except Spiderman.

I used to be a big Punisher fan. Have all of them from the first limited series through like issue 100. Is that special, or not so much?

I'm actually intrigued. I need to stop by my local comic book store. Is there a site I can check out to find what's out?

Batman beating the crap out of Hawkman looks awesome cos I think Hawkman is kind of a tool.

Is that Spoiler in the Robin suit? I know she's already dead but I can't think who else it would be, unless it's Barbara Gordon?

House Of M is pretty good so far. I guess it's mutants have taken over the world and regular superheroes have gone into hiding or something like that and Wolverine is the only one who knows something is fucked up.

Chris, try this out. It's only got this and next weeks issues but I'm sure if you search around online for comic book stores they might have more info.

edit: I got worn out on the Seven Soldiers pretty quickly, plus I had to cut back on some comics and those were some of the first to go. I'll probably just read the issue where it all wraps up and they band together and fight those spider thingys.

Try this out to see what those Punisher comics are at.

I'm huge into comics. But I don't like anything DC has done. Together, my dad and I own over 5000 comics and 95% of that is Marvel. The rest is a handful of DC, some classic Childrens Illustrated, and Archie.

Marvel's doing some interesting stuff right now. First Scarlet Witch goes crazy, kicking the Avengers' asses, and killing off Jack Of Hearts, Vision, Hawkey, Ant-Man, Agatha Harkness, and beating down the others.

Now they've got to decide what to do with her. Only she's taken off with her family and apparently messed with the universe again.

Daredevil's reeling in the aftermath of declaring himself Kingpin and everyone knowing his identity.

And the title to collect has got to be The Runaways.

Hmmm
I'm the opposite. I dont like Marvel that much.
As a kid, I would always get the hulk and spiderman, but as I grew older, DC had the better stories and characters of the two.

I'm actually glad that I like one more than the other.
Comics are not exactly cheat these days.

Yeah, I shelled out I think $30 today. On a week's amount. And that's minus the ten percent discount I get from having a file there.

I'm unemployed so I don't know where I'm going to find money to keep up this habit until I get a job.

I'm sorta lucky that the manager of the comic book shop I get mine from is one of my roommates so I can hang out and read comics or just borrow whatever her and her boyfriend buy.

I'm not much into superhero comics, but I am intrigued.

Recently picked up volumes 1 & 2 of Flight, which as interesting way of introducing new artists/authors.

Maybe this is a good place to ask.

Does anyone know of any good ongoing series or titles that are more in the vein of Daniel Clowes stuff? Or Adrian Tomine?

The only thing I ever see in stores is the superhero fare. I can find their kind of stuff in graphic novel form easily, but I think it would be cool to collect a couple of series like that on a monthly basis.

i'm trying to get into the green lantern right now, what with all the hullabaloo, but i guess i always just thinking of guy gardner and giggling to myself. i like the old lantern/arrow books, though.

i just found a copy of Luke Cage, Hero For Hire 8-9. where Cage fights the Fantastic Four in order to steal one of their jets, flies to Latveria, takes on a small army and kicks the crap out of Dr. Doom because Doom owes him $200 from an incident in Harlem a few weeks before. which is the greatest idea for a comic book EVER.

Also, Apparently the latest issue of Powers (#12) has Patton Owalt and Brian Posehn doing the letters column in the back.

There has always seemed to me to be quite a lot of "indie" comics that would fall in line with the adolescent angst/sexual-coming-of-age portion of Clowes work. Unfortuantely, I don't know of any specific ones since that sort of thing isn't really my cup of tea.

As far as Clowes' wierder, funnier stuff (Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, Eightball) goes, though, maybe check out Charles Burns' Black Hole. It's actually no longer an ongoing series since it ended with issue #12, and issues 3-4 are currently out of print. Hopefully, though a collection of the series will be out soon. So far, I've only read the first 2 issues, but I can't wait to get the rest. Beautiful artwork and a really interesting/bizarre story.

Also, if you haven't already, check out Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan and Dave Cooper's Weasel (and Pip and Norton), both more for the artwork than the stories although the stories are decent.

Also, I've somehow goteen back into reading a few superhero books over the past year or so, but I'll post more about that later.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. All I know is there's this series called IDENTITY CRISIS that reveals a huge secret within the JLA, and then comes the OMAC PROJECT where Wonder Woman and Superman go at it. And then there's something called INFINITE CRISIS where again members of the JLA turn on each other. Chaotic and I'll figure it out some day.

Hopefully, someone could bring us up to speed.

those two fight all the time, but superman will never win, because he is good. and good is dumb.

i'll explain as much of this as i can later, but someone else could probably do it much better. Infinite Crisis hasn't happened yet. "Crisis on Infinite Earths" happened a while back, was an effort to further de-fuck continuity problems and i don't really get most of it.

Do any of you watch the Justice League Unlimited cartoon? It's pretty good.

Crisis of Infinite Earths - so basically in the '30s and '40s all those DC (then called National) heroes first appeared: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Jay Garrick), Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Martian Manhunter, etc.

Then, after the war I guess super-hero comics went out of vogue. In the late '50s, DC re-introduced them, but some of them had new origins, costumes, and real names. Flash was now Barry Allen and Green Lantern was now Hal Jordan. They wore the costumes that you know now.

However, as time went on, the new characters would meet the old characters, e.g., Barry Allen would meet Jay Garrick. Garrick was supposed to have been a super-hero back in WWII, whereas Allen was a super-hero "now" (whenever now was at the time of publishing). What didn't make sense is that both characters had worked with Superman and Batman, who were always Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne. So DC decided that the old '40s stuff had happened on an alternate earth, called Earth-2 (the "normal" earth being Earth-1). Both Earth-1 and Earth-2 had Supermans and Batmans (Supermen and Batmen?)

Over time, more and more alternate earths were created. DC acquired Fawcett Comics (home of Captain Marvel, of "SHAZAM!" fame) and whatever the publisher that owned Captain Atom and Blue Beetle was called, and those characters were from new alternate earths.

Finally, I guess it got unwieldy and DC decided to consolidate and update for more modern stories. Crisis of Infinite Earths was a story that did this, published in 1985. What the actual Crisis was about is not important, but basically afterwards there was only one Earth and the origins of many of the characters were re-told and modernized (see Batman: Year One or Superman: Man of Steel). Since then, DC has slowly been filling in its backstory (for example, JLA: Year One ddn't come out until 1999 and I think there are current stories telling the first meetings between Batman and Mr. Freeze, and between Superman and Captain Marvel).

Anyway, I hope that wasn't too confusing, but that was basically it. So now all the '40s heroes served in the past, and then there's the modern group. There is only one Superman, one Batman, etc. All pre-Crisis stories either never happened or happened in some modified way.

*SPOILERS*
I'm not sure if this is in the correct order as in the books.

In Identity Crisis someone kills Elongated Man's wife, Sue Dibny. Dr. Light is one of the main suspects and it's revealed that he tried to kill/rape her earlier and Hawkman, Green Arrow, Zatanna, Black Canary and a few others stopped him and then decided to wipe his mind so he would no longer be a threat. Batman walked in on them doing this, Zatanna stopped him and then they wiped Batman's mind of this incident. Flash found out about this and said they had to tell Batman about this or he'd tell Batman himself. Robin's father and Captain Boomerang kill each other. Dr. Light hires Deathstroke to be his bodyguard when Hawkman, Zatanna, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Flash & Black Canary come after him. There's an awesome fight with Deathstroke taking on all of them. Then Dr. Light remembers that they wiped his mind and escapes.

This is kinda where I thought the series fell apart.

The Atom's wife is almost killed and it's finally revealed that she stole the Atom's gear and is the one that killed Sue Dibny. I forget if Flash tells Batman what happened or if he finds out himself but Batman is pretty much pissed off about this and I think he leaves the JLA. I'm not sure if I missed anything else. Anyone?

The OMAC Project is pretty good so far. I'll leave that one spoiler free for now.
