Scored a bunch of vinyl at several thrift stores and antique malls this weekend. I'm no vinyl snob; I just enjoy the bigger size and can pick up a bunch of crap nobody wants for cheap. It's all for fun, not any real collection goal. All said, all this shit cost me about $38 or $40, which is why I like digging through the stacks of Andy Williams and Moody Blues albums.

Beach Boys, Pet Sounds
Alice Cooper, Killer
Al Green, Call Me
Rolling Stones, Black and Blue
The Knack, Get the Knack
T. Rex, Electric Warrior
Van Halen, Van Halen I
Joe Jackson, Look Sharp!
Elton John, Madman Across the Water
Creedence Clearwater Revival, Willie and the Poor Boys
Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Everyone Know This is Nowhere
Sly & the Family Stone, Greatest Hits
Neil Young, After the Goldrush
U2, The Joshua Tree
Rare Earth, In Concert
Bruce Springsteen, Darkness on the Edge of Town
Mick Jagger, She's the Boss
Rolling Stones, Emotional Rescue
Sesame Street Fever

Plus two Rolling Stones, 9/27/73 "Fear and Loathing at the Watergate" and 8/14/1975 Neil Young interview by Cameron Crowe on the cover.

OMFG, STFU!!!

Actually, great haul. I hope you enjoy listening to your pristine vinyl copy of "She's The Boss" in the day room at Attica, cos that's where your headed.

Jeez... I have 13 of those in vinyl but 50 yards from where I sit... in boxes... 1500-2000 records... and I have not owned a turntable that works in 10-12 years...

I feel like my Dad and 78's.

Man, I loves me some junk store vinyl....I've picked up all the records I have in LV (only about 200 or so) from either junk stores (thar be treasure!) or a couple of fantastic used shops within 2 blocks of my office. If anyone is jonesing for something specific and can't find it, let me know and I can more than likely find it for you here. I think my biggest find here was a double album called The Ernest Tubb Story from 1959- pristine condition, and fucking autographed to a Denver DJ inside......

Shame on you, Harry. You need to liberate that collection by finding a decent TT and SPIN THOSE THINGS!

Not a thrift store score, but here's yesterday's used CD finds at a mall FYE:

Elvis Costello & The Imposters - The Delivery Man
The Cure - The Cure
Daniel Johnston - The Early Recordings Vol. 1
The Melvins/Fantamos - Millennium Monsterwork
Pulp - Different Class
The Romantics - 61/49
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Streetcore
U2 - Boy

And these bought with my mother's Barnes & Noble discount card plus an additional 10% off coupon:

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Shake The Sheets
Nouvelle Vague - Nouvelle Vague
On! Air! Library! - On! Air! Library!
The Redwalls - De Nova
Michelle Shocked - Threesome: Mexican Standoff/Don't Ask Don't Tell/Got No Strings

I thought you were going to say you found a white leather belt and a narrow black tie, and i was totally going to offer to buy them off of you. Imagine my disappointment. Only a PBR and some Arcade Fire can cheer me up now.

Nice little haul. I constantly ask myself the following question when sifting throught vinyl at the Thrift store.

How many fucking records did Amy Grant put out?

I always like going through thrift shops as well. In chicago for a couple days this past week and found a few for a buck each in one shop:

Lords of the New Church: Nothing Sacred
Joe Jackson: Big World
Smithereens: Green Thoughts
KD Lang: Angel with a Lariet
Bob Marley: Mama Africa

Week beforearound here, ended up with:

Jerry Lee Lewis: Return of the Rock
The Platters: Songs for the Lonely
Nat King Cole: Greatest Hits

I also really like the every other month record shows that come around town. People rent tables and sell a wide range of stuff, some guys have big dollar collectables, some folks look like they just found a bunch of stuff in their basement to get rid of, and whatever in between. My favortites are the ones that have a tone of unsoreted stuff to dig through that they just label as a buck or two each. I've found a ton of great stuff digging through those. My latest great bargin from there was an original issue on Chess of Muddy Waters Moanin' at the Moon for 2 bucks.

When I have more money, I still go for vinyl mostly even for new stuff, but times like these days when I'm pretty broke, hunting up cheap records is about the most fun I have getting more music.

Where are you, and how often do those shows come around?

Is there a site you know of that a promoter or something publishes dates and locations? I'm innersted in this gig.

I'm in St. Louis. They come around every other month. The place is about the size of your typical school gym and its always pretty well filled up with tables. It can be hit or miss, sometimes I walk out with a half dozen records, sometimes I walk away with a few dozen.

The prices are almost always better than regular record shops, although some table are better than others, and the collectible stuff is usually priced a bit high, I think. If you're a fan of 70s rock, you can probably make quite the haul. I usually see tons of that kind of stuff.

If you happen to be nearby, its probably worth checking out. But, if you are looking to travel, to be honest I think there are probably better ones in other locales. I hear there's a great one in Austin and have heard of others that are bigger and better than the one around here. But, if you are close and feel like wanting to check it out, I think the next one is in August. Let me know and I can post details.

If I were that anal, I'd have packed and unpacked them in order, no? I bet it's actually a minority of folks with more than say, 200 records, who do no alphabetising whatsoever. Of course some of them misguidedly use alpha-alpha rather than alpha-chrono, but's that's a chat for another day :)
