here's a track for you T.

mind you, i think these guys are WAY overrated. there are several bands playing in the same style that are much better and more memorable [pelican, red sparrowes, tides].

How are they overrated? It's not like they're the Backstreet Boys. I have never heard any hype over Jesu whatsoever, so I can't see how they're possibly overrated.

And while on the topic of comparing them to others, I don't see how they're THAT similar to Pelican and especially what little of the Red Sparrowes I've heard (whom they sound NOTHING like - Sparrowes are way more like Explosions in the Sky or a heavier Godspeed You Black Emperor!) Pelican might sound similar on the surface, but they're completely different once you listen to them more closely. Jesu is the same style of churning, repetitive doom-laden industrial metal that Godflesh was (because it IS afterall Broadrick's band minus GC Green, and as such is the "son of Godflesh.") Pelican is much, much more melodic, almost "pretty" in some sense. They're only similar in that I'd say that people who like Godflesh would definitely like Jesu, and would probably also like Pelican. Jesu should be compared to bands that actually are similar - Isis, Neurosis, etc.

Jesu are similar to Neurosis? Sorry, not even remotely close.

The reason I compared them to Pelican, Tides, Red Sparrowes is because these bands have that grindingly slow, progressive, heavy doom/dirge sound quite a bit of the time. I did -not- say that they sounded exactly the same.

And yes, Jesu have been touted as being one of the most amazing bands of all time on many metal/extreme forums and soulseek. They're completely forgettable IMO.

A LOT closer than the Red Sparrowes. Maybe not Souls At Zero, but especially with regards to The Eye of Every Storm.

Again, I don't hear how Pelican and Red Sparrowes are more than remotely similar. There's a definite similarity between Jesu and Pelican (as well as, obviously, Godflesh) but very little between Red Sparrowes and them (I haven't heard Tides yet, so I can't say.)

That's ridiculous. I don't see how it's possibly for them, after one album and an EP (that I can't find anywhere,) to have reached that status. It's just a continuation of what Godflesh was doing around the time of Pure. It's good, but it's nothing life-changing like that kind of hyping makes it sound.

i only think jesu is being touted as the next big thing by the usual godflesh crowd that goes apeshit anytime broadrick releases something. i like the record a lot and definetly see the comparisons to the last few neurosis albums, moreso anything pelican has released anyway. i haven't heard anything by tides or red sparrowes. did anyone get in on the pelican pre-order? i missed it. grrrrrrrr....

Yeah, "boring" is understandable. So is saying they're "overrated", honestly, although I do like them. I think they're at least better than Pelican.

It's definitely slow stuff, and not necessarily exciting. I think what has so many fans gushing over it is how it so seemlessly blends the doom/sludge with a shoegazey My Bloody Valentine/Bark Psychosis/etc. sorta sound. I admittedly haven't heard a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread, but I can't say that I'd really want to hear a lot of stuff like this and certainly not every other band doing the slow prog/doom thing. Still, I like the Jesu album well enough to recommend that people hear it.

Godflesh is Jesu's big brother, or dad, maybe. Both bands feature Justin Broadrick, and for a time in Godflesh, drummer Ted Parsons. Usually Godflesh just used programmed drums and samples, giving them a slightly hip-hop tinged sound (VERY slight.) I don't know the circumstances, but GC Green (bassist for Godflesh) parted ways with Broadrick and I guess he just decided to change the band's name or something. I would highly suggest any Jesu fan not already into Godflesh pick up Pure and Streetcleaner, at least.

Which song was it, out of curiosity? Regardless, I think they're the kind of thing you have to be in the right mood for. It's intense, grinding, abrasive stuff that is very repetitive. It can be really mesmerizing in the right mood, just like John Coltrane's late-period stuff where he was seeking a way to express his religious feelings, but it often sounded like endless shrieking sax and clanging percussion.

I haven't liked any of the few tracks I've heard by Jesu. Godflesh was much better, especially Pure.

it's the warmest cd i think i've ever heard.

incredibly repetitive and uneventful, no question, but it plays like a lullaby for me.

also, considering the type of music it is i think their songs work best in the context of the entire cd. but, then, i think that about all music really

The song is "Friends Are Evil". I'm willing to listen to another song -- send me one that you like.

I actually dug "Friends are Evil." At times it reminded me a little bit of Hum, although a little bit slower and more of a metal edge to it. Does the rest of the album sound similar? I might have to look into getting it.

It's a thing of beauty.

You wanna hear some really shoegazery metal, check out Shape of Despair, either Shades Of... or Angels of Distress.
