so i just went through all 50+ pages and ranked and reranked a bunch of shit, thanks to Haq for speeding that shit up (did you lube it with soy latte?) and props to the peeps for continuing to add albums (most of which is: A. unlistenable, B. doesn't exist, or C. could get you jailed for even mentioning)

so here is my proposal for the Charts:

1st we will probably need a new mod for the charts unless Haq has nothing better to do....dunno how all that works but I nominate anybody but me.

Anyways, why not divide the charts into two sections.....

Section 1 would be the "Obner favorites". These would be the albums that have achieved an arbitrary number of votes (say, um, 20 or so)

Section 2 would be the rest; in order for an album to get from Section 1 to 2, it will take campaigning, arguing, and possible illegal album swapping by the proponents of said albums to achieve the necessary ____ votes.

See, because I'm sure a lot of these albums are good (or even :gasp: awful), but i gotta hear 'em first.

So what do you guys think :?:

I'm not entirely against the concept, but I think it needs to be brainstormed and fleshed out a little more before trying to implement.

At the same time, I think the idea of having each poster's average rating available could be useful.

I'm giving you 2 choices, such as I can:

1. Bring up some sort of irrefutable evidence that shows how Philspoon is somehow deserving of your over-the-top bile (and I've read most of what he's written since I've been here, in February - don't see it), or...
2. Fucking get a new shtick already.

You strike me as both intelligent and (mostly) even-tempered, so I am 100% ok with either of these two outcomes. I don't know Phil, you could be dead-on about him and I don't know it. But imagine one day that someone slags EPA or Chuck D or OldBulee or some other nice, helpful person for the 1000th time, without provocation, and you just have to ask... what the fuck already?! Shit or get off the pot, dammit.

Sorry, good night.

I don't need your permission to call an asshole an asshole. As you people say, "Get over yourself".

I guess someone's taken over for me during my weekend absence.

As for those ideas, I like them but I really wouldn't want to read two different charts. How about something like on Ebay with stars or something next to them for when they get the required number of votes?

I kinda like Shivs idea, especially if it worked on all albums over the vote threshold. That way, garbage with stars is universal trash. And I probably own it.

I don't see any reason to split the charts. As Haq said, just applying a filter does the same thing.

Elvis Fu Wrote:

To the extent it helps, I've rated 469 albums and given an average rating of 7.24. Pasting my votes into excel, stripping out the vote portion, converting text to number and calcing the average took about 1 minute. Haq's a busy guy who donates more time than we have any right to expect keeping the board running smoothly and I wouldn't expect him to try to program anything else into this when its easy enough to do your analysis if you really care to.

What you getting at is we all have different scales and rating methodologies and a 7 from one guy doesn't equal a 7 from another guy. I'm not sure an average vote is really all that telling if you don't consider it in the context of what albums people rated. Its easy enough to just click on someone's name and get a sense of how they rated. I don't consider my 7.24 all that high as an average when I consider that 7 is really my cutoff for an album that I consider worth buying and I'm naturally more inclined to rank stuff I like than stuff that I don't. And my average rating is likely to drop over time as the general quality of new additions drops and the number of 10's in my mind is finite.

Just look at people's votes and make your own adjustments. I always tend to add 1 to Radcliffe's ratings for example. He seems to consider 10 unattainable perfection given that his own listmania #1 only merited a 9.

Apparently glib remarks on a message board are enough for some folks to have a complete handle on my character and what I'm all about.

Apparently I neglect my kids and have no life. Though my kids and wife might argue the point and say silly things like I'm a great dad and father, apparently wife and kids would be wrong.

I made a flippant remark awhile back about my daughter saying she still loved me even though I hide on the computer. I've mentioned before that she's bipolar. She's also prone to making proclamations about how I'm the greatest dad in the history of the world. Depends on what her mood is. She's a great kid and I'm quite skilled at parenting, thanks for the advice, though.

As for the other claims, I started a thread last summer about the fact that the actress from A Series Of Unfortunate Events was a pretty girl and a good actress. With no other intent other than to make those statements as is.

My parenting and marital skills are perfectly fine. And the two things that have been levied at me are the two things the furthest from who I actually am. I spend tremendous amounts of time with my family and they're important to me beyond imagining. But I can't control what people on a message board will think.

I can however go take a shower and get to work to provide for that family like I do every workday.

You kids have fun now.

billy g, I see your point, plus I've been pasting into Excel to check out myself. Since it was fairly easy to do manually, and Haq has asked for suggestions, I thought (along with at least one other poster) that this might be a decent feature. If it's a pain in the ass, fuck it.

We are all pretty likely to admit that our ranking methodologies are different, but an average ranking gives me just a quick glimpse of a poster. Some people I know I tend to rate similarly and others quite differently based on our own personal tastes. Other people I don't necessarily know.

The average would just be one way to quickly see how someone rates, sort of like a batting average. Sure, it doesn't figure in walks, RBI or runs scored, but it can help determine if someone is worth watching at the plate or investigating further for similar tastes.

Then again, if it's only me and whoever it was that also suggested it, screw it, it's not that big of a deal.

You cocksuckers just had to hijack my thread didnt you.....

Anywho, Now that I understand the filtering thing (apologies, i didnt really get it before my original proposal, now i give it a thumbs up) I agree that we dont necessarily need two charts.

*licking wounds and thinking up new ways to get free copies of the albums on the charts*

And jeez Cory, that line about the glory holes was right up to the line (but phew, not crossing it thank god)

Hey, pick one asshole - you can't be both.

Max - I got it.

As soon as I'm coding again (probably this week), I'll throw in the remarkably simple average rating feature.

Wow, that makes sense. I didn't see it in that light before. I guess he is a creepy, family-neglecting, tt-mongering asshole. Huh, you think you know a guy... (shudder)

Bloor, I'm with ya on the album lust. Seeing all the highly ranked yet unheard albums is a kick in the ass I sorely need.

It might be easier to simply subtract 1 from your ratings. ;)
