I'm guessing because they get the Oompa Loompa songs right instead of completely ruining them like the first movie.

And no really-cutting-edge-for-about-20-minutes-in-1970 words-flying-around-the-screen video effects from "The Electric Company."

I think I'll just go re-read the book, thanks.

I thought both movies were great for their respective genres. Unfortunately, this will probably be the last great week for summer movies in 2005 since August looks like shit.

Enjoy 'em while you can I guess!

Well I know I'll probably enjoy The Island if for no other reason but to stare at Scarlett for 2 hours.

you never fail to suck me in with your crap...I don't know how much of that is hyperbole, how much of it is beer, and how much you really believe, but come on. I hope you're completely kidding, because this remake owned. They were so dead true to the book, Depp's interpretation of the Wonka character is dead-on and much more true to how Dahl portrayed him. Wilder injected too much of his own personality into the role and rather than let Wonka play him, he played Wonka. If you know what I mean.

This movie is incredible. Helena Bonham Carter owns.

The music video Oompa Loompa songs done in recognizable styles from the 70s and 80s were truly awful; otherwise, good entertainment.

I didn't find those annoying at all, I thought they were mad funny. Oompa Loompas dressed up as Beatles for two seconds in a quick shot? Funny. Porno funk song about Violet Beauregard? Funny.

Like I said, the movie was great, but I thought that the songs were the best part. Were you watching more than listening, Haq?

Neither watching nor listening did me any good. The lyrics (yes, I know they're accurate) were none too clever and did not add anything to my knowledge of the characters. The style of the music, like I said, was just embarassingly contemporary, and will be the first thing about the movie to date. IMO, those scenes already seem dated.

I've got to agree with Haq on this one. The songs, along with the overly-stupid jokes (Johnny Depp making farting noises with his armpits?), were the worst parts of an overall-pretty-good film.

This is 100% my feelings, but I hated pretty well hated kiddie movies as a kid,

And Burton is a HACK. I can't name a movie of his that I have really liked. I might give E. Scissorhands 2 stars, but that's the best one by far.

Heh, I've got 2 free passes to see this tomorrow. I'll let you know how it is. And for the record, Scarlett be damned-- I'll be watching Ewan.

I didn't know anything about The Island until my brother mentioned it to me this morning. It seems Michael Bay had some good actors to work with so I'm actually sort of optimstic about it.

Beetlejuice is the only one worth a damn. And Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, but that's different.

Hey Christian, the songs were pretty funny, AND I don't remember Johnny Depp making farting noises with his armpits, maybe I wasn't paying attention at that part? I do agree that a lot of his jokes that were meant to be funny weren't funny at all, but.. in my personal opinion I thought the songs were better than they were in the original film. And this one was a better depiction of the book, and in conclusion I liked it a lot better than the original.

Fun little movie.

A few things...

"Hack" does not mean "director I don't like." Tim Burton, barring his direction of Planet of the Apes, is definitely not a hack.

I don't know how anyone could say The Corpse Bride looks atrocious.

The last movie I'm really looking forward to this summer is The Brothers Grimm. Come on Terry, don't let me down.
