I just unearthed an old box of VHS tapes and found a couple that are at nearly 20 years old containing hours and hours of videos taped from MuchMusic circa 87-89. Watching it has been an eye opener. These tapes constitute quantifiable proof of what music I liked enough to have not taped over.

So far I'm seeing lots of Guns 'n Roses, Poison, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue. Then all of sudden I get a bunch of Terrence Trent D'Arby (anybody remember 'This Side of Love' from Neither Fish nor Flesh?) and Living Colour. And because I'm Canadian, several Sass Jordan videos. No Mitsou yet, but I'm waiting.

Anybody else do this?

I discovered some OLD headbangers ball tapes I had recorded.
King Diamond, Suicidal Tendencies, Ratt, and a whole bunch of weird devil music.

Good stuff

In addition I've got some archaeological material from old 120 Minutes episodes, 1989-91.

i have two crates full of headbanger's ball tapes. although i'd doubt that i'd ever get back to watching them, i can't see to part with them.

the ones i still watch though, are my 120 minutes tapes. i still enjoy those tapes.

If I did this, it would probably be porn. Either that or late night Sinemax and HBO from free weekends.

I haven't got to that box yet, but CityTV was a godsend to a 15 year old.

heh, I've probably got a few videotapes in my basement with old videos on there... some were recorded from MTV, but most came from that show "Night Tracks" on WTBS in Atlanta.

I know I've also got a ton of mix tapes from my highschool days. I should try and re-create one of those someday to see how lame I actually was.

I've just had a spell of Duran videos on this tape, Hungry Like the Wolf, New Moon on Monday, Notorious and Skin Trade, the latter two I hadn't seen in forever.

I used to tape Night Tracks when I was about 10 or 11. I wish I had that tape because it would be gold to see.

I am parting with my home-made collection of simpsons episodes taped from tv (with commercials carefully paused out). Now that the dvd's are coming out... But I ain't parting with the Pumkins video that came out during Siamese, because one of the songs was filmed at a show I was at, and the performances are GOOD. It reminds me how great they were before Billy caught the suck.

When we moved last year I gave away probably a dozen "Simpsons" tapes & around 15 "Seinfeld" tapes. All episodes from the original broadcast airings.

I kept all my "SCTV" tapes that I bought from a guy in Winnepeg about 6 years ago ( he taped the shows in the late 80's ) , though.

Yeah, I have some old 120 Minutes video snippets and even some of that IRS show that was hosted by the guy from the Fleshtones [am I remembering correctly?] that came on after 120 Minutes. Also, I have one or two snippets from the show Andy Warhol did on MTV.

My mind is like a sieve these days...awww...but now I'm nostalgic for Mr. Thirwell...heh.

That would be Peter Zaremba, lead singer of the Fleshtones. And, if you ever come across it, grab a copy of their Hexbreaker album. Really fun band. They still together? Still tour?

Anyone else remember New Wave Theater, hosted by the late Peter Ivers? I remember seeing a bunch of punk bands on there, like Dead Kennedys, Legal Weapon, 45 Grave and a bunch more, along with some really funny mock commercials and weird video stuff. USA used to show 'em on Night Flight in the early 80s.

Ahhh...yea that was his name. I remember liking some of their music back then but haven't explored it as a more "refined" adult (heh).

I don't remember New Wave Theatre but I do remember seeing some good stuff on Night Flight which I think was on USA or one of those commercial cable channels. They used to play some fun movies too like "Ladies and Gentleman...The Fabulous Stains" and "Liquid Sky" and whoa...brain is not synapsing...too much stress is causing me to lose memory!

Yes and yes.

Peter Z was the host of IRS' The Cutting Edge-- the precursor to 120 minutes by about 5 years.

The Fleshtones still tour, and still destroy any other band that gets on stage. They're the band I've seen more than any other, and I still catch 'em at least twice a year, even if I have to fly to NYC to do it.

They've a new album coming out this year, slated for August, entitled "Beachhead". It's on YepRoc.

Their last album, "Do You Swing", was one of the best albums of 2003.

Other projects you might enjoy:

The Full Time Men (Keith Streng and Peter Buck, two records released on Coyote, Yo La Tengo's first label)
The Love Delegation (Peter Zaremba with Wendy Wild, two albums, Spread The Word is easy to findl; Delegation Time is impossible--my copy got stolen when the bastard movers walked away with A-R of my cd collection in '98. Seven years of constant searching and I have yet to replace it. "Hey Disco" from that album may be one of the best party tunes ever).

I've got boxes and boxes of stuff taped from 120 Minutes...good times...

Was CityTV and Night Tracks the sort of shows that went on after midnight and showed boobies? I only caught those shows a couple times. They really do need to come out on DVD.
