The only albums I bought and sold this year were Fiery Furnaces and The Cure.

On the other hand, though I haven't heard them, I am in general awe that anyone still cares about Green Day or U2.

And, from what I've heard, I don't understand the love of the Walkmen or TV On The Radio either.

Loretta Lynn - like this quite a bit (top 20), but a metacritic average of 95?
SMiLE - great for what it is, and it's fun; just not my thing
Scissor Sisters - OK for what it is, but I'd rather listen to Elton John for this

Only those not familiar with Smith and discovering his work after death would try to pretend this is his best. Solid, intriquing, and purchase worthy, but please.... don't feed me the mainstream media and popular music magazine line that this cd was his best. Darn good, but not life changing. Fuck the MSM and popular music magazines for jumping on the dead celebrity bandwagon trumpeting his work after death when they were shovelling shit and ignoring him when he was alive.

Anyway, good album, not great album compared to his other works. Overated by the death factor IMO

As for the base root of this discussion, of course it's bullshit to dislike an album simply because others like it; it's as ridiculous as liking an album simply because others like it - but do you really think there's an Obnerd around who'll admit to doing either? Nuh-uh. And if you think there is, then grow a set of balls and come out and say it.

What really needs reiterating is that debate, discussion, and dissent are the traits that keep a music board healthy. Personally. I find ovine acquiesence more irritating than mindless contrariety.

TV On The Radio

Bastid, don't TELL people. You'll ruin it.

The personal contempt was more prevalent on CMJ and most of the reason why I never became a regular poster on I Hate Music or Hipinion. There's not much of it here. I like when discussions get heated, when it's about the MUSIC, not when it carries over to insulting the person. Unless they start it, then gloves are frickin' off, hot damn, bring it on.

Besides, passive-aggressive contrarianism (and a healthy sense of the absurd) is how I've managed to continue to post all these months despite the facts that I can't get out to the cool concerts, can't afford all the cool cds and haven't got the foggiest notion what urban indie scenes are all about.

Am I the only person who doesn't particularly care for 'The Rat'? That's really making it hard for me to get into the entire album, but I'm trying.

damn, so much walkmen hate. i find the album quite enjoyable. the production is amazing, they create a sound all of their own. the record is so passionate. one of a few rock records this year that was worth anything.

I'll echo this sentiment. For me personally, there are a few songs I really like, and others I really don't like, which makes it hard to listen to from start to finish. But overall, I just don't get the hype.

As for the Walkmen, it took a while but I really like it. I like "The Rat", but my favorite tracks are "Little House of Savages," "My Old Man" and some of the others towards the end of the cd.

Personally, I don't go around accusing people of liking something just because others do. I see you do it all the time, though. In your mind, I guess that makes you ballsy.

There may be people here who simply like things because others do, but I don't make it my business to pretend to know who they are or to attempt to call them out. Soon enough they'll realize that what they're doing is unrewarding. I have no way of knowing whether or not someone really likes something or why. I can only take their word on it, but I can be wary of descrepencies as I see them. Your constant accusations of "ovine acqiesense" and terms to that effect are tired and petty. You're not talking to a room full of scenesters here.

Hype around music bothers me far, far less than self-righteous anti-"hipster" castigation and disproportionate backlash. I can easily decide for myself if music in question is worth my time and whether or not I like it. If I find a heavily hyped album to be bland, it doesn't mean that everyone extolling its greatness is just following the crowd. They may all like it as much as they say they do. Sometimes a lot of people like the same thing.

Do I detect "disdain" for people's tastes here? Occasionally. Postmersh made comments to that effect in another thread, and I did call him out for it. Also you seem to be directing some amount of it at me (and I hope I'm not reading too much into your posts) but not for my tastes. Instead you've rather condescendingly admonished me on separate occasions for coming off as a snob or applying my opinions too broadly. Kind of hypocritical coming from you, I think. I also don't think you've really paid attention to the nature of most of my posts.

I absolutely agree that debate, discussion, and dissent are vital here, but sometimes I think you try too hard.
