I haven't bought any new ones yet since I'm kind of broke. I've been making do with the factory Sennheiser ones that came with my Iriver. Are you talking about the Shure or the Etymotic Research ones? I think when I finally do buy some I'm going to get the Shure's as they're a little cheaper.

Yeah, the Shure was what I has decided on as well, but I'm in the same boat---no tengo dinero...

I did find some Sony's that the Sen. left here that are at least better than the factory iPod ones....

It's kind of weird that the Phillips ones that I had weren't very loud unless I turned on the noise cancelling feature, yet the Sennheiser headphones sound a lot louder and they don't have noise cancelling. The only thing that sucks about them is they hurt a bit to keep in your ears.

Hmph. I bought this set of "in-ear" Maxels (they have the ghey neckband) at Wal-Mart for like 4 bucks just see if I could stand the in-ear thing.

I can stand them fine, but Jesus H., if those werent the worst sounding headphones EVER.

I'm boycotting vague subject lines, otherwise I'd offer my advice.

I have the Shure E2s, but they require an amp. If you're going to listen straight out of a socket, get the Ety 4Ps.

I picked up a pretty fin pair of in ears, with some kind of space-age foam that adapts to the size of your ear canal...like $20 at Best Buy. Not exactly the best thing ever, but WAAAAAY better than the iPod standards (worst headphones EVER?) and better than those ones you are talking about that I left there.

Can't remember the brand name just now.

i've got the Sony MDR EX70LP Ear-bud Headphones and I can honestly say they're the best pair i've ever owned that didn't weight 4 lbs.

Hey Yail you might want to check out these. My Sennheiser ones that came with the Iriver crapped out on me last week, the same problem I had with the Phillips ones. The cord near the headphone jack was coming loose or something and they would only work in one ear. I actually like those Sony's better than the Phillips ones. The cord is nice and long (maybe too long) and they've got some good bass.

These have great sound, but they don't block sound at all (although they appear in-ear-ish, they are completely open) -- the Stax SR-001MK2.

Those look pretty good for the money. Thanks for the heads up.

Picked these up yesterday, mainly because they sell them at office depot which means I threw them on the old expense account. Checked them out in the truck and they sounded pretty good. I'll give them the lawnmower test today and test the effectiveness of this alleged "noise canceling"

Those are the ones that died on me. And they go through batteries like crazy.

I have Shure E2c's and they're excellent. They don't need batteries and are more than loud enough with lots of bass. I can walk along a busy road and hardly hear the traffic (which might be a little dangerous, actually).

1 AAA for ????; they definitely sound better with the switch on. Actually, the headphones themselves have an active boost/volume control.

Update: Once you get them adjusted in your ear so as to get the bass right, I think they sound pretty good; even on my huge commercial riding mower I didnt have to crank them up too loud to hear over the engine.

We'll see about the durability.

It says the battery is for noise reduction but it just seems like all it does is amp up the volume.

I used to do that in my car when the muffler started to go.

Yeah, how would battery-powered noise reduction work? Would they send anti-noise waves outward?

No, it has a microphone on the outside, and superimposes the inverted version of those waves on the music you're listening to. So yes, noise reduction would require batteries. Unless you're just talking about stopping up your ears.
