...including me.

case in point: "Di Do" from Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do

"Hey, let's sample a music box, some scraping noises and one or two piano chords for nearly 9 minutes. It'll be ART!"

And, yet, the ambient Eno-wank in me loves it.

What is it of it that gets you then (I haven't heard it)? Other than looped, is it manipulating conscientiously, recorded interestingly, arranged fittingly, paired with agreeable samples ... ? Or is it really just hack ambient that you feel a knowing guilt for liking?

Well, I wouldn't call it hack ambient, more like subdued & pretty mucking about appealing to the converted.

They should put out a power-pop album full of 2 1/2 minute long Badfinger-type songs, just to mess with peoples heads.

It's an EP (or rather three-track CD) with the the tracks comprising the title. They were commissioned pieces for the Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation.

They wrote that music to accompany a modern dance troupe, what did you expect to hear, The Kinks?

don't get me wrong, agaetis and () are 2 of my favorite records of the 00s. i just think it'd be all fun and good if bands like sigur ros and radiohead could do what the kinks, zombies, and beatles were able to do...if only for one record, ya know?

well for radiohead, i kind of want to say that that's called "pablo honey" and it sucks and that's why they went in the direction they did. to get away from that crap and because they didn't really do amazing conventional songs.

it would certainly be cooler to hear that now, but wouldn't it just be like the second section of "2 + 2 = 5"? I'm happier that that has the crazy intro and is accompanies by 13 other amazing tracks.

It would be cool, but I'm going to say no thanks.

Isn't Sigur Ros's claim to fame the fact that they are playing music that is unique? Why would they throw their uniqueness away? Even for one album...

if it ain't broke don't fix it. I can name 20 bands off the top of my head that sound like the Kinks if i want my Kinks-fix.

There's only one Sigur Ros, i'd like them to stay original

also, if they do do a pop album it should be more like SMiLE than Village Green :)

2 + 2 = 5 is one of my all time favorite Radiohead songs.

I saw the Cunningham troupe dance for 20 minutes to the amplified sound of John Cage rolling water around inside a conch shell, so you should be grateful for Sigur Ros' 2 piano chords!

I concur.

And I think Radiohead's done mighty fine for their time... but then again, I'm biased.

Replace Pablo Honey with The Bends and replace "didn't really do" to did do really good conventional songs.

Didn't I already say, on the other board, that Lil' Jon should produce the next Sigur Ros lp?... And, when they'd start speaking Hopelandic, he could add a backing loop of, "What!?"

'Nother idea...

Zach - since he's not doing anything else - should make like Axl and reform Rage, but with no other original members. Instead, he could have Sigur Ros get their grindcore on backing up his raps.

See: The Bends. Brilliant rock and/or roll. Not as self-absorbed as all future releases. Not necessarily better, just louder and more fun. You have to work at the rest of the Radiohead catalogue, but not The Bends.
