Yeah, so they tend to change (except for #1), but here are my favorites today:

1. Robert Quine (The master of the unexpected twist and the cringe-inducing – in a good way – overbent string)
2. Richard Lloyd (Pure fire)
3. Adrian Belew (See the appreciatioin thread)
4. Neil Young (Raw emotion and not afraid to hit a wrong note and make it work)
5. Joey Santiago (Stunningly original – like Quine's retarded 3rd cousin. I mean that as a compliment)

6. James Burton (Chicken-picken good!!!)
7. Tom Verlaine (just a bit too cerebral to make the top 5 , but top 10, for sure!)
8. Johnny Marr (The master of the chord inversion and the effects pedal)
9. Carlos Santana (Forget all the radio pap, the man's got soul)
10. Steve Cropper (Mr. Minimal, just plays it right.)

Hendrix doesn't get a nod because, like The Beatles, he is in an entirely different class.

beat me to the punch PopTodd....

1. Frank Zappa (playing a whole orchestra with a guitar)
2. SRV (with apologies to Jimi and the blues legends: SRV was better)
3. Trey (the only thing close to Zappa, has lost a bit but is so sound in every fascet of playing that its sick)
4. Clapton (sory, I know y'all hate him but he is easily the most technically proficient player (with the possible exception of Robby R.) to ever pick up the instrument)
5. Eddie VH (another guy that its easy to crap on but his talent and innovation are undeniable)

probly gonna have to throw out some Honorable Mentions etc, but these are the Masters IMHO.

that's ok by me: as long as its players (you, Todd, Cap'n, Busty, Jewels, Albion etc.) i can listen to any argument but i'm opinionated as shit about my guitar players.

Clapton may be a fantastic guitarist (I've never seen him live) but the fact that he hasn't written a single good song since 1970 really irks me, so I intensely dislike him.

in no particular order, until I think about it some more:

Zappa
Fripp
Frehley
Santiago
Howe
Denison
Ronson
Hendrix
May

I'm willing to have an adult discussion (for once) on this topic but ARE YOU GUYS CRAZY THROWING OUT JOEY SANTIAGO?????

please explain why you think Joey is something special. and you guys know that i love the pixies but i will take frank black as a guitar player any day of the week.Joey is a really average player (Lyle Workman smokes him)

kinda like metallica. kirk hammet can not hold hetfields jock.

oh and i appreciate you guys not killing me for throwing out trey. 'preech.

I'd like to add:

John Fahey
Leo Kottke

And no matter how good Trey Anastasio once was, he is pure fucking shit now, thereby negating any chance he should have at making any best of list.

In terms of a soloist, Black may be better, but in terms of developing innovative, uniquely quirky lead lines, Santiago was one of the best.

guarantee Black wrote most of that shit.....Joey is just not a talented natural player. No offense, he would probly be the first to admit it.

I'll take and add in no particular order except top 5 and bottom 5:

Neil Young
Mark Knopfler
Robert Quine
Pete Townshend
Lindsey Buckingham

The Edge
SRV
Fuckin' Liam
Van Mo
Kadane, Tweedy, maybe Clapton, he's so technical he's Nasheville, it bugs me, but hey, I do like/own some of his albums

This could all change for me tomorrow for me, but the top 5 are fairly constant all time faves. Jimi, well, he exists outside the list.

Anastaio/Garcia types, jammy whammy I prefer the shortened studio versions.

Doc Watson, his ilk and bluesmen are totally different lists.

I'll take style before overwrought noodling(Eddie VH) anyday.

turn me on me on to the genius of Richard Thompson.

not being condescending at all here; i've just always heard so much about this guy and need to be schooled on his talent/importance.

Adrian Belew
Brian May
Dave Gregory
David Hidalgo

Honorable mentions:

Edge
Robert Fripp
Richard Thompson
Ray Manzanera
Mick Ronson
Tommy Bolin
Andy Stewart
David Rhodes
Mark Knopfler
Johnny Winter

As soon as I started this I realized it would be hard to stop. With the exception of Tommy Bolin, I've seen each of these players up close and personal and would sell my soul to play like any of 'em.

the first time i heard Albert King i lost most of the respect i had previously held for Clapton. He's obviously talented, but he sounds so much like King its disgusting.

everybody stole Jewels--you know that. Albert King is f-ing incredible but Clapton is better IMHO.

Post your favorites, dude----I'm always curious as to your opinion.
