everybody stole Jewels--you know that. Albert King is f-ing incredible but Clapton is better IMHO.

Post your favorites, dude----I'm always curious as to your opinion.

turn me on me on to the genius of Richard Thompson.

not being condescending at all here; i've just always heard so much about this guy and need to be schooled on his talent/importance.

No time at work to provide a decent repsonse- I'll try to revisit this later this evening. But genius he is.

i'm also not that big a fan of clapton, so i think i was looking for another reason to not like him.

guitar players who always catch my ear:

willie nelson - his little licks between lyrics are amazing.
mark knofler - ditto
neil young - i love his range
jimmy page (making my rip-off comment ironic)
whoever played with james brown in the 70's
pete townshed -
jeff tweedy - i like how much he does with so little

And maybe not my top 5, but names that need to appear in this thread:

Warner Hodges
Rick Derringer
Robbie Robertson
Howe Gelb
Steve Dawson
Karl Precoda

And I'd be interested to hear what some of the Obner geetar slingers think about Britt Daniel's playing - if you can get past the "that shit is easy to play" sorta response. It seems to me Britt has a very subtle and interesting approach to guitar. It's almost like he's attempting to play lead without touching on any of the standard rock cliches (ie: Chuck Berry licks, deedly-wheedly shit). He also seems, to my ears, to use his leads as some kinda rhythmic device. I don't know - I'm in way over my head - but the evolution of Spoon has been one of the few instances where I feel I need to understand music theory in order to put it into words.

And Rads, Britt is a fantastic player who has a great control over both his sound/tone, his effects, and his impact on the overall sound of the band (a lot of Lou Reed influence in that respect and even some jazz-the "knowing what not to play" thing)

He also gets a tremendously wide-ranging tone out of a fairly limited guitar.

Hodges plays in Jason & The Scorchers. He had his hand mangled in an industrial accident as a teenager and was forced to re-learn the guitar with some twisted fingering techniques. The guy can play blisteringly fast, or he can slowly wring out tears.

He's also a helluva a showman. Non-stop energy, bouncing and twirling, slinging his guitar around his back, etc. without missing a beat. He's been doing this before the hair-metal pansies popularized it on MTV.

thanks Billz--I'm still waiting for my intro to Jason & the Scorchers music; i'm guessing its gonna be positive considering that i generally trust you, Rads, etc.

Jesus mang, you need a Jason and the Scorchers mix. I'll put one together for you if Billz doesn't (although Billz has immediate access to way more of their stuff than I do).

agreed, dude is incredible; his use of effects (even when said effects where REAL ghetto) combines with his musicianship is unmatched.

Some of you guys are confusing your favorites with talent.

Can't wait until the Cap'N can actually weight in on this one. And where is Busty? Both those dudes are openly the best musicians (besides Phil/epa--his credentials speak volmes) on the board and I'm very curious as to their opinions; as well as RobotBoy, Dov, and TimmyJoe--where yall ninjas at?

VERY happy to see BILL NELSON getting some props.
Be Bop Deluxe was a perfect mix of early Bowie meets Hendrix. He played that old Gibson 345 (f**kin good tone) like it was butter.
His first few 'post' BBD records has some good material which IMO holds up slightly better than the older 'dramatic' BBD tracks. I heard they had some sort of reunion last year in the UK.

beat me to the punch PopTodd....

1. Frank Zappa (playing a whole orchestra with a guitar)
2. SRV (with apologies to Jimi and the blues legends: SRV was better)
3. Trey (the only thing close to Zappa, has lost a bit but is so sound in every fascet of playing that its sick)
4. Clapton (sory, I know y'all hate him but he is easily the most technically proficient player (with the possible exception of Robby R.) to ever pick up the instrument)
5. Eddie VH (another guy that its easy to crap on but his talent and innovation are undeniable)

probly gonna have to throw out some Honorable Mentions etc, but these are the Masters IMHO.

Ok, there are "chops" and there is "artistry" a sub-set of which is "heart."
All of these five have chops, 3 out of 5 have artistry, and only 1 (SRV) has heart. Hendrix had all three as well, of course, and he invented the electric guitar that we now know.

Chops? Go for jazz or classical then. Larry Carlton, Bill Frizell, John Abercrombie. Christopher Parkening.

Innovation? Jazz. Terje Rypdal, Joe Pass, Django, Charlie Christian.

But we are talking rock and roll here...so going back to the chops or the heart For example:... Trey is fluid... but Jerry Garcia (to pair the two obvious jammers) is hungry, struggles, shows his demons for all to see.

And Neil Young bleeds naked in his hunger, not just exposing his demons but slaying them, eating them, and giving birth to them again... all in a two minute solo.

And yep, props to the Edge who always gets forgotten.

what some of the Obner geetar slingers think about Britt Daniel's playing

fookin good, that's what I think.
I believe he was playing an old Gibson 345 when I saw him last month. I for one don't mind at all if his playing is simple. Britt finds a way to get his point across always serving the song. Technique is nothing more than some failed style.

Very surprised to see so many mentions of Neil Young; great artist but I have never considered him a great guitar player: Despite his excellent songwriting, he has never been a great soloist and even his chops are rudimentary at best.

Of course my man Harry comes correct with the Jazz guys to school me----you are point on and dont forget your boy John Mc Laughlin: he is truly stellar.

Hendrix is right there for me along with Cropper, Robertson, James Burton and even Jimmy Page-----the truth is that I really listen to these assholes (and had the pleasure of playing with some great, insightful musicians) and like everybody have devised my opinions accordingly/

OJ did it.

keeping with my theme of talking tash on obviously talented white blues guitarists, SRV bores me to tears.
