Jesus cristo.... it ain't dark yet, but it's getting there.

1. Latino is term of choice. It is always descriptive, it doesn't sound "poofy" in any sense, nor like a census demographic.

2. Let's deconstruct just a tad. The point is "showin' THEM who's BOSS." The outsider breeching station, not observing the ritual of place, needing to be re-introduced into the social order threatened.

3. "Gordo" is actually often a term of affection. "El hombre es como el arbol, crece con los anos." Though without the tilde, that means growing with the anuses, not the years. Men are more "manly" with a bit of weight, and maturity, correlated to thickness, is admired, desireable. Also in Latino culture, and Latino men specidically, people are not totally obsessed with their weight. Don't panic and become bulimic when someone addresses their "gordo-ness." Women often call their husbands "Gordo" as a term of affection. "Pendejo" is always a term of disapprobation when used exiting a fast food restaurant.

4. I think the Latino gentleman with the Mexican flag on his arm probably wanted to marry you, and you dashed his hopes with your potty mouth.

Si, soy maricon, y que?

I was at a friends house a few weeks back & a friend of his told us practically this same story. He was getting rung up buying something & the cashier was talking shit about him to a coworker, he understood every word & when the transaction was done he turned the tables on the bitch & clowned her. Funny thing is he's Latino & speaks Spanish fluently. She thought he was white

Well said.

Perhaps "gordo" is used as a term of affection very often, but I think the tone of his voice and the rest of the comments he made outweighed the usual connotations a bit. But then again, I take things too seriously.

And I don't know how many times I'll have to explain that the thread title was just to get people in here. If I had titled it "I Spoke Spanish With a Spanish-Speaking Gentleman" I doubt there would be much discussion here.

Seriously. You have to put that on a shirt. And put a song with that title on the Tickle-bear album.

Awright...if we're gonna be correct about spelling a form of the word "tattoo" in this thread, I'm gonna have to correct "hastle". It's "hassle".

As you were.

And by that same token, we're all pronouncing it "messican," right?

I prefer MEX.

Like "There wasn't much ol' Krauther would take off a damn Mex."

I find Robert Duvall's "Messican" from Lonesome Dove to be more authentic, but to each his own.

"Use to be Messico,
Used to be Nava-Joe"

Well, if you're gonna use the whole word, sure, but the provenance of "Mex" comes from BUCK OWENS.

I, too, like to pretend I don't understand when someone is speaking a foreign language like Russian or German. The hard part is keeping a straight face when they say something funny.

In a grocery store in college, two (larger) old ladies were discussing pantyhose sizes in german, and didn't realize they were blocking the aisle. So as I'm listening, I'm translating, and it's pretty embarassing stuff. And then I fuck up as I'm going by and say "entschuldigung!" (excuse me) and they froze.

I don't even know what you are trying to imply here. I lack skin pigment... just like most of the rest of y'all.

If you wanna call me a racist, please, by all means, do. I am sure it helps many of you sleep at night.

not sure if these guys are racist, I don't know them well enough.

But they are definitely not racially sensitive - i am not sure if it is a schtick or is how they are in real life but I am betting on the latter. It doesn't bother me here since this is a stupid message board but in real life if people were saying this stuff I would tell them to shut the hell up (i have quite a few friends like this for some reason even though portland is the capital for political correctness)
