I love how much key elements of Batman's origin change every time someone tells it: http://www.dcindexes.com/indexes/batman/

Goddamn, I've only got $30 left until I get a job. I might stop by the shop tomorrow but I think I've got about $40 worth in my file.

I want to keep up to date with House Of M just because it's "the event" of Marvel this summer. And where I left off, Wolverine knew something was up and Hawkey and the black guys had him trapped.

Also, I finally picked up the V For Vendetta graphic novel from the library so I'm reading that. I don't think I've ever read a full DC comic but this is pretty interesting. Even though V seems to me to just be the Joker and Willy Wonka combined together. I figured I'll see the movie, if just for Portman, so I may as well read the book first.

Also, I just read the American Splendor graphic novel and I was thoroughly impressed.

Let me know what you think of it.

I've been thinking of getting it for some time.

Bunch of Niles/Templesmith (mostly Niles) related stuff: Freaks of the Heartland; an adaptation of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (I wonder which came first, this, or Remains?); and the one I bought -- Lurkers:

It's great. Get it. Definitely read it before the inevitably horrible movie comes out.

V For Vendetta is freakishly awesome. Considering how long ago it was made only testifies to its' badassedness.

Finished it today. I was confused near the middle when V breaks into the television studio and what occurs after that. But I kept reading and pieced together the rest.

I thought it was good. I'll definitely see the movie now. But I don't know if it was good enough to make me want to buy it. I'll have to see how I feel in a week or two. I polished off the whole graphic novel in the span of twenty-four hours.

Also, I found myself being kind of like "well, yeah, it's just 1984 redone as a comic book." I found it hard to give them much creative credit, I guess? Still, it was entertaining. Had some good plot twists.

I also found myself kind of skimming through the subplot with the government guys and the one guy's wife trying to gain power. I kept getting them confused because they looked alike and so I ended up giving up.

Actually doesn't look that bad. It seems like they might have been pretty faithful to the book.

It's funny that they used that same actor from the 1984 movie but in the opposite kind of role.

But as far as V for Vendetta just being "1984 redone as a comic book", I kinda disagree. Granted, I've never read 1984, but I think I'm familiar enough with the story to know that V for Vendetta isn't just a retelling of it. Sure, it's set in a post-apocalyptic totalitarian England with a Big Brother-like system of monitoring and controlling people, but the similarities stop there. The primary focus of V for Vendetta is on the characters V and Evie, and there aren't any equivalents to them in 1984. Comparisons to 1984 are purely cosmetic as is saying that V is just "The Joker and Willy Wonka combined together".

I think that's probably one of his best books. sure there are many 1984 parallels, but that can be pointed out for hundreds of fantastic stories that can just as easily be3 celebrated for their own merits (and i didn't even like Brazil...)

had no idea the Wachowskis were doing this. that's the only seemingly dubious part of this whole project. are they just gonna do comic movies from now on? it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

they should really, really release this movie on guy fawkes day.

Well, technically, they're not "doing" it (directing). But they did write.

Looks cool, I will go see.

According to the site, Thomas Haden Church isn't playing Sandman, nor is he Venom, as previously rumoured. He'll actually be 'The Chameleon'.

Says an insider, "A source close to the production of Spider-Man 3 confirmed for me that the main villain played by Mr. Thomas Hayden Church will in fact be the Chameleon.
Church plays Dmitri Smerdyakov, who goes by false name Dr. Turner at Peter's college. The Chameleon also has a brother in this film, which will set up Kraven the Hunter for a future sequel I'm told."

Adds the scooper, "They will also start issuing a new animated DVD featuring the Chameleon right before the new movie hits theatres".

The other villain in the film will be the Second Green Goblin, played by James Franco, but he won't rear his head until the end of the film. No word on who Topher Grace is playing yet, but it's been reported that he'll be a bit wearing a villain's tag too.

thought some of you might be interested in this:

POW! ZAP! ART! IN LOS ANGELES
A two-museum exhibition of comic art should enliven the coming art season in Los Angeles this fall. "Masters of 20th-Century American Comics," Nov. 20, 2005-March 12, 2006, organized by scholars John Carlin and Brian Walter, features 500 original drawings, proofs and examples of published comics at both the Hammer Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

The Hammer takes on the first half of the 20th century, focusing on work of legends like Winsor McCay (Little Nemo), Lyonel Feininger (The Kin-der-Kids), George Herriman (Krazy Kat), E.C. Segar (Thimble Theatre), Frank King (Gasoline Alley), Chester Gould (Dick Tracy), Milton Caniff (Terry and the Pirates) and Charles Schultz (Peanuts). LA MOCA is spotlighting comics from the ‘50s to today, including works by graphic novel trailblazer Will Eisner (creator of The Spirit), pioneering Marvel comics artist Jack Kirby, Mad Magazine’s Harvey Kurtzman and living legends R. Crumb, Art Spiegleman, Gary Panter and Chris Ware.

If nothing else, the catalogue to "Masters" promises to be the most sought-after book of the season, with essays by Tom DeHaven, Brian Walker, Stanley Crouch, Jules Feiffer, Karal Ann Marling, Robert Storr, Pete Hamill, Patrick McDonnell, Raymond Pettibon, Glen David Gold, J. Hoberman, Françoise Mouly, Jonathan Safran Foer, Matt Groening and Dave Eggers. And, of course, lots of cool illustrations along with the text.

i think the real question is why the fuck Kraven is even being considered, let alone already set up, as a future villain. ugh.

incidentally, Brian K. Vaughn and Goeff Johns are interviewed in the new [url=http://redesign.theonion.com/avclub/]Onion AV club/url], along with a review of san diego.

I also recently heard an article on the radio that ...Marvel? I think...is going into the movie business. They've already dabbled with licensing and stuff, but they are moving full-out, prime-not-subcontracter into the movie business.

Here is a related article.

All the reports I've read say that guys on the set of Spidey3 keep saying there's large quantities of sand being used. So unless Eric Foreman's going to play Sandman or Spidey and the Chameleon are going to have a big fistfight at a volleyball match, I don't know what the deal is with this film.

I'm all out against Chameleon and Kraven too. Vulture, Scorpion, Lizard, Sandman.. any of these would be more impressive in a fight.

Just because someone is playing the Chameleon doesn't mean they are going to have a big part. Look at Zzazz (or however you spell it) in Batman Begins, or all the various cameos in the X-Men movies.
