Who don't like Enon? Pulled this one out a couple days ago and I just can't stop it. Hey, doesn't that sound like it would make a good album title? I just can't stop it. Hmmm, maybe for some frenzied ska revival band or something? I know, a dollar short and 24 years too late.....but now I wanna hear some "Twist and Crawl" :)

Oh well, back to Enon! On High Society they added Toko Yasuda who used to be with Blonde Redhead and she adds some very nice synth work and great (kinda Japanese sounding) female vocals on a few tracks. Some of the more experimental and quirky aspects of their Believo! debut (and Brainiac predecessor) were sacrificed in the interest of making a more cohesive and song oriented album and I think the result is much better, even though I really enjoyed the weirdness of the debut. But there's still plenty of quirkiness to keep me happy, although it is much more integrated into the song structures and so adds body and interest to the music. Each song is varied and distinctive and memorable, with influences readily apparent running from Beck and Magnetic Fields to Talking Heads and Kinks. I wonder if OutKast heard this one because it sure seems to have foreseen some of the best moments on their last double CD. As was the case with the first album, the people they thank in the liner notes paints a pretty good picture of what makes this such a good album. Here's a few: ..., Flaming Lips and crew, GvsB, Toadies, the Plan, Les Savy Fav... This is one that gets many spins around here, that's for sure. Goes in the machine and may stay there for days.

Believo! is in my car cd player right now I think. High Society is great too.

Davey,

I'm a fan as well. Believo! and High Society are great albums.

I heard a track called "Shave" from their latest album Hocus Pocus out now on Touch and Go Records but wasn't too impressed with it though...here's a link for some free downloads:

I like it but don't own it. It's been on my "buy it used" list since it first came out.

i like enon. first saw them opening for man or astroman in 1999. believo's good, but high society is the one for me. it gets played around here plenty. hocus pocus, though, hasn't been listened to in maybe a year.

they're coming out with a b-side/rarity compilation soon. i'll be looking forward to it, even though i have most of the singles that it's compiled from.

This is their best album by far, in my opinion. It's much so cohesive than the other ones...

pretentiousness? snobbishness? posting in the wrong thread? i could continue.

Enon put on one of the worst performances I've witnessed in the last few years.

I thought they were pretty decent live, if a little monotonous (the bass sound). They get bonus points for trying to play some requests even though they were totally unprepared for them and kinda messed up.

Though I'm not sure how they could pull a good performance out of anything on Hocus Pocus. I saw them touring for Believo! and High Society, and I like both of those albums.

Believo! is my favorite. It's the most Brainiac-esque.

Wow, I didn't think anyone else really liked them. I really liked Brainiac and was dissapointed when they broke up (due to a death in the band). I think Enons songs are pretty infectious, they were really done well live when I saw them over the summer.

davey, you enon street-teamer. :)

i like enon. but enon is like that movie that won't win best picture at the oscars and won't even be nominated. its not that its not a good film or anything, but it explores with the narrative and the theme and that was it. enon is like i heart huckabees. i was glad i indulged in it, but ill forget i saw it until someone quotes the thing and ill be like "what's that?" and theyll be like "its from i heart huckabees" and ill be like "ooooo i saw that! marky mark is so hott. what has dustin hoffman done since?" and thatll be the end of that.

Heehee, yeah but in another post I stepped on them :(

I hear ya, katie! No Grammy's for the Enon crew but still a warm spot in my heart for bands that manage to work so many of my old favorites into a new sound, especially when the end result is just so damn much fun, as on this one. Kind of like that great new Futureheads album that is near the top of my best of the year list, except the influences are more along the lines of Jam/Gang of Four/XTC on that one. Some similarities, though, since Enon does erupt occasionally into something resembling a frenetic, junkyard-based XTC. Solid stuff ;)
