I have this little indie rock show on a radio station here in Maryland. Unfortunately, I'm preceded by a "Saturday night party" show that "passes along the positive vibes" and gives "shoutouts." Anyway, last week I was in the DJ booth when this tool calls in and asks the DJ, "Hey, can you settle an arguement? I'm trying to tell my friends that the girl from Blondie invented hip-hop, but they don't think she did." So the ass clown DJ says, "No, the girl from Blondie didn't invent hip-hop. Grandmaster Flash did."

I wanted to shoot myself.

Zambia, with a 'bam' added between syllables to make the country (seem) extreme (e.g. South COREea)? Or is Zambambia a unique place?

Seriously, VG claims to have invented the hip hop NYC '78 or so. Pre-Sugar Hill. And my Royals beat the ChiSox 6-5 in 13 and took the series. Seriously.

I read that Gallo was in a band with Basquiat in the late 70's, before JMB was famous...maybe that is where he 'invented it'.

On a side note, I found this great quote in regards to Gallo's film The Brown Bunny

"In particular, Roger Ebert called the film "the worst in the history of Cannes" to which Vincent Gallo responded that Ebert was a "fat pig with the physique of a slave trader". Ebert paraphrased a remark of Winston Churchill and responded that "although I am fat, one day I will be thin, but Mr. Gallo will still have been the director of 'Brown Bunny'". Gallo then put a "hex" on Ebert's colon, to which Ebert responded that "even my colonoscopy was more entertaining than his film"."

Isn't Ebert married to a black woman?

I seem to recall this coming up a week or two ago at work - one of my colleagues was reading Jet, and there was a photo-montage re: some awards show, and Roger Ebert was there with his black wife.

Seriously, Popeye invented hip-hop. Next time you watch one of his old cartoons, listen to his stylings while he's walking to Olive Oyl's house.
