The comparison here was inevitable, so don't even bitch and complain. Two 80's underground stars release solo albums within a week of each other, both of which supposedly are a "return to form". Which do you think is a better album?

I think only one of them has any claim as a "return to form".

Yeah, I realized this as I was posting it. Maybe I should have said that both have been hyped as getting "back on track" with solid albums?

I like Bob Mould's work more as a whole. I think Honeycomb is the stronger album here.

I really don't like any of Bob Mould's solo work, while I enjoy most of Frank Black's solo output.

That said, I like Honeycomb a whole bunch, and I have little desire to hear Body of Song.

Actually, after seeing the cover, I want to hear Body of Song even less.

The correct answer is probably neither and I'm a fan of both. I love most of Frank Black's recent work. He's not a guy that "return to form" applies to. His work has gotten stronger over the years and some of the albums from the past couple of years represent the peak of his career IMHO. If you think this is supposed to be a return to form, you probably missed out on Black Letter Days. Get that instead.

If you insist on picking up one of these two, get Body of Song. In my opinion, its his best work since Black Sheets of Rain. And if you haven't given up on him yet, there's a fair chance that you'll like it. That said, I doubt its something that I'll be listening to at all a year from now.

Honeycomb isn't bad but its a disappointment compared to Black's recent work. I think he jinxed himself with the material he picked. Its hard not to think while listening to his version of Dark End of the Street that while not bad, its by far the worst version of it that I've ever heard.
