Wow. That's my favorite song they've done post-OK Computer.

I totally agree. Zooropa is the best album they have put out since Achtung Baby.

Easily. I respected 'Pop' but Zooropa and Achtung are the only two U2 albums I can say I "love."

I guess I ask because if I were to close my eyes and imagine a band doing just that, that band would be a hell of a lot like radiohead. Whether I'm projecting it onto them or not, it seems an awful lot like an experiment, where they say "let's see if our fans will buy anything," and the next album will be made up entirely of vacuum cleaner noises and answering machine beeps. I exaggerate, but...

I don't think they're doing anything like that, and keep in mind that I don't really care for Amnesiac or HTTT. I think that they're sincere in what they're doing, but they've lost the direction, inspiration, etc. that they used to have.

Projecting all of this crap about them testing their fans and audience and what people will buy is bullshit. They just don'thave it any more. End of story.

You missed me there, sorry. My fault, I could definately have been clearer. I don't they're doing it either. But I think the resulting music is similar enough to make it an interesting comparison. I'm absolutely sure they have complete conviction about their work, 100%. But if one were to make up a band and follow that formula above, the results would be similar.

I'm with him.

although that 17 second mix of Kid A is pretty intriguing, much more so than the unaltered version.

I feel like this particular line of criticism has been playing in a loop since Kid A, when the fact is that each release subsequent to that album has been less experimental. They were definitely trying to push boundaries with Kid A, but they seemed to pare that back with Amnesiac, and return to a more standard rock format with HTTT.

The hard part about listing "self-consciously" (anything) about an album is that it's a perception, and not necessarily an accurate one.

I have to admit, a lot of music in this day and age strikes me as more self-conscious than music from, e.g., the 70's. Am I right? Not likely.

But if I were, I would attribute it to the lack of -- and change in character of -- drugs.

I know, but it does sound like you just don't like (call it "get") Radiohead. I mean, I like "Electioneering" and "Creep" as much as the next guy, but they're not really Radiohead songs.

Who would you say does cerebral rock well?

Eno
Bowie
Devo
Kraftwerk
My Bloody Valentine
Blur (13 is the only qualifier, though)

That's why HTTT was so dissapointing. I would rather have seen them try something else new instead. Hell, if you want The Bends or OK Computer, then listen to them, but don't expect the band to continue doing that sort of stuff throughout their career.

'Electioneering' is one of the worst songs they ever did.

There's certainly a well-defined philosophy in his music, but... Is that cerebral fluid mixed in with that blood?

i know very few radiohead songs by name.
but as i said earlier in this thread, i loved every song they played live.

so maybe i loved that one.

but the flow and vibe of amnesiac does nothing for me as an album.

I almost never listen to any of their pre-Kid A material anymore. However, everything they have done after OK Computer has blown me away and a little piece of me dies every time someone disses Kid A, Amnesiac or Hail to the Thief.

Goes double for me. I just find it an unpleasant listen, overall. However, on shuffle, with all their other stuff (well, no Pablo Honey because it just doesn't interest me) most of the songs quite well together and it makes for a really interesting listen. I also think the b-sides from Amnesiac and Thief are in some cases better than the album tracks.

And, for the record, I like "Electioneering."

I agree. I think it gets way overlooked because of how great everything else they've put out is.

I don't expect Radiohead to keep putting out OK Computer but it was a great album. After that I've like a ton of their songs but have always been disappointed in the albums as a whole.
