sorry 'bout that. this whole series of his "red" paintings hold pretty powerful imagery. i'm really taken by his technique as well. his current work isn't much like this any more.

Yeah, I'm not against modern art at all but my preference is for 18th and 19th century (especially Romantic or Neo-Classical) art.

David of course (I have 'The Sabine Women' up on the wall), Piranesi, Flaxman, Ingres and so many others.

David was pretty amazing, and i've never even seen one in person.
i'm sure they are even better that way.

favorite ingres painting:

while i'm not crazy about all of ingres's (?) paintings i love all of his drawings. master draughtsmanship and he exagerates certain characteristics of people--like hands-- ever so slightly to add a tiny quirky quality to the work.

okay, i'm done rambling on. never get me started on this stuff. back to work

I'm so low brow, I think the collected works of Sergio Aragones should be exhibited at The Louvre, and the Sistine Chapel should be repainted by Frank Frazetta. Can someone please loan me some culture???

For an art school grad I came away with a very small list of artists that I have much familiarity with. Some of my favorites are Jasper Johns*, Nam Jun Paik, and Max Ernst.

Like a lot of people here, I'm more familiar with "low brow" illustrators and stuff than with fine art.

*for whatever reason, I never liked Rauschenburg (I know I totally f-ed up the spelling) much.

I'm pretty sure that was scraped off Tara Reid's last partner.

I was just about to say... where's the Bosch love? ;)

My favorite artist right now is Susan Point, who is Coast Salish and lives in Vancouver. We have several of her prints in my house.

If we're talking classics though, I always liked Van Eyck's The Arnolfini Marriage. I also like Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec. H.R. Giger's stuff is creepy as hell but interesting.

who is the guy who does all the pergatory paintings/drawings?

I like his stuff. I'm not overly familiar with the art world.

I love some of Sanrio's stuff...preferably the badtzmaru period.

oops, and I gotta pimp out two of my friends too...

http://www.cjhurley.com/
CJ does mostly period interior work these days, but he's done some amazing paintings and gesso panels.

http://www.jinscoe.com/
Jerry started out as a grafitti artist in DC, and he's got a style that's hard to forget.

I've got one of CJ's paintings in my house, now I need to work on buying one of Jerry's... before he gets too famous and I can't afford him!

Any love for Gerhard Richter? I think his abstract stuff is mindblowing. I want to do stuff like this.

Image

I need to find some time and get painting again. I haven't really done much with my art education in terms of art (but it did get me my seemingly very stable, safe knock-on-wood job as a graphic artist/web designer, so it has that going for it.)
