or, look what I found at Sam Goody, of all places.

Had to get a tire fixed at Sears Friday night, and found myself at the mall with time to kill. Went into Sam Goody, just to make sure they were still charging $17.99 per CD (I was wrong...some were $19.99).

Way in the back, though, there was one bin with a "used" sign on it. And deep in that bin, among all the extra Three Doors Down and Whitney Houston CDs, was Modest Mouse "The Moon and Antarctica" and Owsley "The Hard Way." For $12 total. I was then happy to be spending my Friday night in some crappy mall.

EB GAMES. I've picked up Naked City, Venetian Snares, Mum, Big L, etc. there, and none of them have been more than $3.99.

When you sell cds there, though, they only give you a dollar or 1.50. Ridiculous.

The bargain bin at this place in my hometown (Highland Park, IL).
The store has HUGE Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand displays and panders to the richbitch North Shore Mercedes-SUV Soccermom set.

I found:
Grant Hart - Intolerance
The Rev. Horton Heat - The Full-On Gospel
Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising

All less than $2 each.

Idiot.

last summer, i was out with a friend who was apartment-hunting. we went to this fucking dive. she was immediately mortified at the prospect of living there, but the guy was cool, so she talked with him for awhile. walking down the hall, she pointed to his record shelves and the guy said, "if you want anything, just let me know." i started digging and eventually asked for a few. he said two held sentimental value, but let me have for your pleasure by roxy music.

that is the most unlikely place i've ever found a great album. oh, and she didn't end up getting that place, but i'm sure glad she looked there.

How are the Grant Hart solo CDs? Believe it or not, I think his "Good News For Modern Man" was in that same bin at Sam Goody.

I wish I knew. I've never come across one. I just know that he was the better half of my favorite band, so I mean....they've got to have at least some redeeming qualities.

really tryin to pad that post count aren't you there, Cemetary?

Edit: Back in the 80's, they used to sell cassette tapes at the WaldenBooks at the mall. Bought or shoplifted a bunch of AC/DC and BadCo tapes that I know have know idea the location of. Not that I'm hot to hear "Shooting Star" but I'd love to have all the Bon Scott AC/DC again....

Despite the kinda fluffy production, Intolerance is pretty damn good: I'd give it a solid 8/10. Grant was always the poppier half of the Hüskers and without Bob's hellfire guitar, that really shows through a lot on his solo albums.

The Store : Hastings Entertainment.

Score : the Japanese Import of The Wildhearts "Anthem : The Singles Tracks" - a CD that routinely goes for about $35-50 - for $5.99. With all the inserts ( obi's & whatnot ) intact.

I literally semi-yelled "HOLY SHIT" right there in the store.

What that CD was doing in THAT store ( which never has anything rare ) in THAT town ( a college town of about 20,000 in Southeast Kansas ) is beyond me.

I was going to buy the new Jamie Lidell for $15 the other day and then I found a copy in the used section of Twist & Shout in Denver for $9. That store was pretty awesome.

There's a record/CD store in Santa Cruz called Streetlight. They used to have buttloads of CDs in boxes on the floor for 25-50 cents. Some of my happiest memories are of sitting on the dirty floor, stacking CDs as high as I could (just because they had a cool cover, or it was a good label, or hell- it was a band I'd heard of).

I found my favorite CD of all time there- Bluchunks (w/ an oomlaut), plus many other faves. Man, I'd get $30 worth of CDs and be in bliss for days. 8)

They still have the cheapos, but it's been picked pretty clean.

Not a CD, but I found a bunch of discarded Beatles 45s at a local vacant lot where people would dump their junk at. My family and I would take our dog for a walk there and, one day, he happened to chase a lizard into a pile of junk. I followed him and my then 11 yr old self found a treasure.

I think finding Spoon's "Telephono" at a mall in Niles, IL (later sold for $70 on eBay) was pretty damn sweet.

I wouldn't say it's a great album but it's something I never thought I'd find:

Rest stop gift shop on the New Jersey Turnpike, buying a Coke. That two-tier spinning rack of CDs--cutouts nobody wants, out-of-season Christmas CDs, Roger Miller's 18th greatest hits collection on Curb Records, etc.

And right in front, the Staple Singers' 1984 Turning Point on CD, 5 bucks, wherein they cover Talking Heads' "Slippery People." Really great version--Mavis even does the silly "bu-bu-bup bu-bu-bup..." Porky Pig scat bit from the original.

Then there's the unexpected price: I found Neil Young's Japan-only EP Eldorado at Tower Records mispriced at $6.99. Yoink!

looking through my parents records i found a mint conidion copy of Tim Buckley's "Lorca"

i asked my parents about it, and neither had heard of Tim Buckley. My mom vaugly remembered a friend giving them a small pile of promo records from a radio station. Sure enough it had a promo sticker on it.

I think they're quite good. Good News has a great mid-sixties feel about it. Run back and buy it now! I just picked up Intolerance myself in the last couple of weeks for $8, and from the little I've gotten to hear, it's fantastic. Keep an eye out for Nova Mob, too - it's pretty much just like Hart's solo stuff.

Of course, anyone with a Colinswood login might check my stuff out (tcj.) You might just find some of this stuff to at least listen to . . .

FYE -- I found all sorts of good electro at the one up here in Arundel Mills Mall. Under "techno" or something. More than I could spend.

at the $2 Shop (a shop where everything in store is $2 or less, as the name would suggest) i found Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell, The Beatles - Let it Be..Naked, and a whole stack of Prince albums.
