It seems to me that quite a few people here don't like Zep because of the people that typically do like them.

I'll admit that's the reason I've never given artists like Sublime or Bob Marley a fair shake. I always associated them with the the stoner kids and thus never gave them a real chance.

Well yes, and no. I am not thrilled with people who leave Creed in the cd player ... but I also do not like Creed very much. One can disitinguish.

What can I say. I like the SOZA album. I bought it back in 1997 thinking I wasn't going to like it but wanted to see what the big deal was. It was a pretty big CD for me that year - 26 years after it came out. Haven't listened to it much since then tho.

It's funny, I've had always had a problem liking both of those, but the reasons are a little different. I don't give a shit about distancing myself from "stoner kids" (mainly because I was one for a little while) or assuming that the tastes of people I don't like are inferior to mine. I liked Sublime at first, but then they got overplayed as shit. (I also think they were overrated as shit.) Bob Marley on the other hand was always getting shoved down my throat when I was hanging out with certain people, and so I've never had the urge to listen to him on my own until very recently.

I mean, I know I'm guilty of avoiding the whole jam-band thing (Phish, Widespread, etc.) because of my aversion that whole crowd of fans. But I think it's pretty important as a music fan, if you want anyone to take your opinions seriously, (I know a lot of you "don't give a fuck" and might jump all over me for saying this) to get over that and just judge the music for what it is rather than who embraces it. I haven't managed to do that myself, but I do think it's worthwhile to try. I'd rather be surprised by finding that I like something I thought I hated than just to be able to go on talking shit to people about how shitty their tastes/lifestyle is and how listening to certain music puts them in a "dumb" crowd.

I can't remember the last time I put on a Zeppelin CD to listen to (used to love 'em back in high school), but I certainly don't hate them. And for some reason, I still have like 3 Zeppelin t-shirts that I still wear frequently.

I do try/am trying to be more open about that and just judge music and music alone. But the fans really make it hard. Bands like Nirvana and Death Cab are/were torn with having these guys in the crowd that would beat them up in highschool. They really didn't want to have anything to do with them, but sometimes you don't have much of a chance.

Regardless, I don't mind Sublime but I don't think I'd buy anything from them. I'm sure I should look into Bob Marley but he's still near the bottom of my list of artists I want to check out. Not as a knock against him, I'm just not much of a reggae guy, plain and simple.

And back to the initial discussion, I just don't like LZ's music. Their fans are my family so I can't hate them. I'm just not too much into their songs. Then again, I don't like the Beatles either. But I try not to mention that much because the backlash and criticism it evokes bores me to tears.

I'm not a reggae guy either but I do like Marley - he's not "just reggae." I just put him under the huge umbrella of "rock" because his music transcends the genre to me. It's more important than just being reggae, I mean. There's some fantastic stuff in his catalog that I would think almost any open-minded rock fan would like. Catch a Fire is freaking amazing.

You don't have to like Zep, but I think saying "I've never met anyone with good taste in music who likes Led Zeppelin. Or anyone who likes Led Zeppelin that I'd give any credibility towards" is pretty presumptuous and pretentious, don't you? Replace Zep with any band you like and tell me that doesn't sound totally conceited.

I have Houses Of The Holy and I like maybe 2 songs off it. Other than that, I have no use for them.

Go to a crowded bar

Put on Led Zeppelin II aka THE BROWN BOMBER

watch the place go instantly crazy

then tell me you don't like this band.

I think this would probably hurt my perception of the band.

That's right, because of people like them, you are obligated to hate them.

Buster.

Someone has finally pegged me. I didn't think it would ever happen.

john paul jones was pretty amazing too.

if you haven't seen the acoustic section of the DVD, check it out. He does all the cool acoustic parts on Led Zeppelin III.

I just picked up Catch a Fire on vinyl over the weekend. And yes, amazing it is.

growing up in OKC, there was only one radio station that was even close to being listenable...and they played the shit out of Led Zep

and that's my problem with them...I was beat over the head with Zepplin rock blocks and Led Zep all-request hours for many years and that's sucked most of the enjoyment out of the music for me

it's not about being too indie for Plant and the fellas...I just have no interest in hearing their music

Hell yeah! The KATT with Greg Zubek and the Bladerunner! Man, that station sucked but I have a lot of memories associated with it.

I really like Led Zeppelin but I don't care to listen much to the 10 songs that the aforementioned DJs pushed down my throat. Their recently released live DVD and BBC recordings are really good.
