So say you could create a tribute album to any artist you wanted with any bands/people you wanted on it, what would the tracklisting look like?

Riding around downtown today on the bus, I thought how I'd really enjoy a tribute album to Eels. Mine is slightly realistic in the sense that I chose a lot of people he's worked with, is friends with, and mostly artists that are still making music in 2005. Anyway, here's my quick idea of a tracklisting:

01. Abandoned Pools – Hello Cruel World
02. Badly Drawn Boy – Nowheresville
03. Cinerama – Manchester Girl
04. Matthew Sweet – Novocaine For The Soul
05. Daniel Johnston – My Beloved Monster
06. Tegan And Sara – Flower
06. Fastball – Last Stop: This Town
07. Tom Waits – Cancer For The Cure
08. Ben Folds – Dead of Winter
09. Rilo Kiley – I Like Birds
10. REM – Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues
11. The Flaming Lips – Souljacker
12. The Arcade Fire – Fresh Feeling
13. Cake – Teenage Witch
14. The Lovin’ Spoonful – Marie Floating Over The Backyard
15. Beck – To Lick Your Boots
16. Joanna Newsom – Dusk: A Peach In The Orchard

Hmm. This is a good idea. I'm going to have to think about this.

What about, The Medication Is Wearing Off? Probably one of my favorite Eels songs..

I recall this thread from CMJ a year or so ago. There were some pretty decent things thrown around.

This type of exercise is always fun.

I'll hold this thought until I have a job I need distracted from.

Ditters, but I already know which group needs a tribute album: Golden Earring. They have so many good songs, not just "those two".

Ditto.

I have an idea but I may need a boring day at work(or busy since that's when I get all my flashes of brilliance, ha) to do this.

"Bastard" Dusty Chalk (or perhaps whatever band I'm in, if I can convince the rest of 'em)

or perhaps "Standing In My Light"

or maybe even "Outsider", althought that would be a tough one to cover, since it's already perfect.

this is too good of an idea to be buried. so, i picked pulp because they're a band that i love and that i rarely hear covered. what i tried to do was pick bands based on whether they'd actually like the song for its content. i spent much of this afternoon combing over pulp albums and browsing my record collection in search of a band that could handle whatever song was currently playing. i went with a lot of their hits, but also dropped in a few not-so-common songs. eh, i'd love to hear it.

the faint - "countdown"
lcd soundsystem - "party hard"
fischerspooner - "death goes to disco"
kasabian - "f.e.e.l.i.n.g.c.a.l.l.e.d.l.o.v.e."
air - "the fear"
robbie williams - "underwear"
stars - "razzmatazz"
fiery furnaces - "sorted for e's & wizz"
gorky's zygotic mynci - "babies"
belle & sebastian - "a little soul"
doves - "weeds"
rilo kiley - "like a friend"
super furry animals - "common people"
the hold steady - "disco 2000"
manic street preachers - "bad cover version"
the strokes - "do you remember the first time?"
scissor sisters - "sheffield: sex city"
the postal service - "mile end"
saturday looks good to me - "mis-shapes"
rufus wainwright - "this is hardcore"
fruit bats - "sunrise"
sondre lerche - "the birds in your garden"
sufjan stevens - "the trees"
julie doiron - "i love life"

I'd very much like to hear these two.

Just to fit the album title, I'd make it a live recording of a show to benefit whatever charity the guys would want the $$$ donate to.

Not totally sure of the tracklist, but these might be interesting:

One Time, One Night: A Live Tribute to Los Lobos
Mas y Mas - Café Tacuba
Kiko & the Lavender Moon - Tom Waits
That Train Don't Stop Here Anymore - X
Dream In Blue - Trey Anastesio
One Time, One Night - Steve Earle
Will The Wolf Survive - Elvis Costello

and whatever else...

Not on the soundtrack, but in the movie "I am Waiting" by The Rolling Stones...who covers this?

Good one, but I think I'd also be interested in a Weird Al meta tribute album, in which the parodied artists cover Weird Al's parody of their song.
