...in radio?

I'm sure some of you will throw out some female on NPR or something. I don't listen to NPR so I can't comment on that. But I've noticed over the years that it seems like women, at least on commercial radio have been there simply to be like the mother figure. They seem limited to saying things like, "Oh come on guys", when one of the dudes say something off color of whatever.

I have NEVER heard an entertaining female on radio as a host of any kind, EVER.

I'm not talking about someone who is simply spinning music either. My sister who knows nothing about music can do that, pretty well I imagine. I'm talking about a female that can hold her own show, talk about topics and have opinions.

Show me the light.

Sandra Golden, who is working with Mayhem in the AM on WQXI now, is actually pretty good; mainly because she isnt afraid to sink to the level of the 3 other guys on the show. Plush she reads well and slips in mentions very well.

Only downside: somewhat grating voice and laugh.

The worst is the chick that works with Al Franken. I know that she is supposed to be a "radio professional" there to keep Al on the clock and run point but SHE IS GODAWFUL. JESUS.

I really don't think so. When Linda Cohn (YELCH) or that other skank guest host for Dan Patrick, it becomes instantly unlistenable. Not only are they wrong headed and unknowledgable, but have ZERO radio talent

You really should listen to NPR if your're looking for talented radio women. My favorites:

Terry Gross (Fresh Aire) -- intellectual conversations on the arts and the politics and inner workings of the arts. Also interviews with celebrities and important artists. One of the best interviewers there ever was.

Gretchen Helfrich (Odyessy) -- intellectual conversations on a dizzying array of topics, with a focus on their social and societal implications. The woman either knows something about everyting or has the best damn research team in the world.

Probably my two favorite radio shows, period.

I've never heard her before, but Wendy Williams has made a name on New York's WBLS. She's a tell all personality that is not afraid to be confrontational no matter who the guest.

I've heard of her before as well.

Anyone ever listen to Garofalo on Air America?

I don't listen to it often but I've liked Randi Rhodes's talk show on Air America when I do. It's basically a 4 hour liberal gabfest but it can be entertaining especially when she gets pissed of Republicans on there and they want to argue with her.

Never get in an arguement with a pissed off Jewish woman. It's a no win situation.

I have a few times. She just comes across as a whiney IMO. The due that's on the show with her actually runs it as far as I can tell. she just pipes in now and then with comments. I've noticed that when they're interviewing someone, he asks most, if not all of the questions.

Maybe she should have a radio show that talks about something she actually knows something about, no talent-washed up-hacks.

Hows about Laura Ingraham? I used to kind of enjoy her (not so much her politics) when she would sit in on Imus but I've never listened to her radio show.

Plus, I fuh.

The skank guest host is the worst. Eric Cosillius (sp) is almost as bad.

Garofalo is worthless at everything.

Mary Lucia, NPR branch station 89.3 The Current, Minneapolis. Great voice, fairly competent, but sometimes her reviews of bands/albums wantonly mirror PFM. Only complaint.

I've never heard a decent guest host for Dan-o. And I actually like Dan. But let me tell you, he absolutely gets killed on the Sports board of this nerdy radio BBS that I check out....

A great example of the rule about brains vs looks and radio vs tv as a career. She's warm, intelligent, quick on her feet, well-spoken, and just generally very damn good at presenting interesting people. But her face would make a freight train take a dirt road. So she works radio.

What the address of that BBS?

I like the Patrick show, too. Don't listen much anymore, though.

To be fair & honest, about 98 % of ALL radio "talent" blows - male AND female.

I wholeheartedly second Terry Gross and I add Mara Liasson, Michele Norris, and Melissa Block from All Things Considered on NPR. they are knowledgeable, do quality work, and can hold their own in an interview.

I will also add Sarah Vowell from This American Life, played on NPR, but created by PRI (Public Radio International), so I guess it is possible that it is played on non-NPR stations... Sarah is witty, knowledgeable, and I wish she had a greater role on radio. I'd give her her very own channel to program on satellite radio in a minute.

Yeah, Robin Quivers often gets criticized as being nothing more than a laugh track for Stern, but she holds her own with the guys and gets in some funny quips of her own now and then.
