Yes, I have heard switchfoot and I group it into "nu metal'. The same genre as those other hacks.

I laughed.

There's nothing nu-metal about Switchfoot. "Meant to Live" is the hardest song I have heard by them and it's diet grunge at the most.

I put "Christian Rock" in the Oxymoron Hall Of Fame, right up there with "Military Intelligence" & "Microsoft Works" .

There's only one thing more lame than "Christian Rock", & that's "Christian Rock" bands that try to hide it - "Oh, we're Christians that just happen to be in a rock band" - shut the hell up.

Last time I checked, he was a country artist. As a person, pretty fucking rock 'n' roll, though.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Christians as long as they don't try to tell me how to run my life. But "Christian Rock" by definition cannot exist. IMO.

So basically you're saying U2, Pedro the Lion, Sunny Day Real Estate, 16 Horsepower, etc. should quit living in denial and call themselves Christian rock bands?

If, by that, you mean whoring yourself out to a new band every day, then yeah, you're probably right.

No...I'm talking about the bands that ARE Christian Rock bands ( or started out that way ) that begin to deny it once they start getting popular. THAT'S lame.

Yeah, pretty much. It's both, really.

You can believe all you want, but when you start singing about it you're getting into territory that by definition is NOT rock 'n' roll. The very phrase "rock 'n' roll" is synonymous with FUCKING. Last time I checked there wasn't a whole lot of fuckin' going on in the Christian Rock world.

I'd say you're stretching it on the first count and dead wrong on the second.

I think maybe what started Dawg down that path was crap like Creed, where most of the singles are tongue-in-cheek worship songs. "Can You Take Me Higher?" etc.

Meh.

Unless I have my history wrong, the first uses of the phrase "rock and roll" is music came from songs where it was a descriptive term for sex. Like they used to use "ball". Same deal. And let's not forget that in the early days everyone was terrified that that new crazy music was gonna turn the kids into sex-crazed zombies. For Gawd's sake...they wouldn't show below Elvis's waist on TV.

As far as the second part goes, I defer to your superior knowledge. And give you the thumbs up. :)

I've probably given the impression here that I listen to a lot of Christian rock -- I don't (though admittedly I did in high school). But I have friends tangentially and intimately involved in the Nashvegas Christian music scene, and it's a whorehouse.

And though you're probably right that the term "rock'n'roll" had some initial sexual implications, you also point out as well as I could that those implications were based more on the misconceptions of frightened adults than on any inherent quality of the music itself.

Like who? I'm just clarifying. Who's denying it and shouldn't be? I figure if we are going to throw around a label like Christian rock, which is essentially a ludicrous marketing term cooked up by a subculture of people in the 60s who thought listening to music created by non-Christians is wrong, we may as well know what makes something Christian rock. Can they have anything but blatantly evangelical lyrics? Can a member of the band be non-Christian? Can they say any of Carlin's seven dirty words? Can they sing about sex? Can they vote democrat? If the answer to any of these questions is "no," you have pretty much eliminated 95% of the artists that profess a Christian faith or have band members that do. I can guarantee these are major areas of concern for narrow minded folks who buy music exclusively from Christian bookstores.

I can understand the association of Creed with Christianity to some extent since Scott's lyrics were spiritual, and somewhat dubiously Christian. After Creed broke up, I remember him saying that he does in fact profess a Christian faith, but so does Bono for fuck's sake. Scott said he didn't feel comfortable with the tag "Christian rock" because the other members of the band didn't necessarily feel the same way he did. But also, from what I remember, Creed used the word "goddamn" in their lyrics, which would not fly in Christian rock circles. I think Creed's music is/was horrible, but I have, at one point, been down in the trenches of the Christian subculture long enough to see why the Christian rock tag can be somewhat justified. Creed is not Christian rock.
