I joined the golf team in high school to get free lessons. I still play a few times a year and shoot in the 90's. It's fun but I'd rather play 9 holes. I get slack on the back 9 and tire out.

Shooting in the 50's is pretty good for starting out.

To take the stress out of parring every hole, our coach use to say to the lesser talented ones(me), " Play every hole like a par 5, you'll end up with a 45." That's a decent score for 9.

I got my 54 on a par 33 course. ssssshhhh...

I have played about 4-6 times a year for the past 8 years or so, and have only been to the driving range maybe 5 times.

I suck at it and lack the desire and perseverance to get better. Beer-a-hole scrambles are fun, though.

I keep track of my score in a similar way - I count every hole as a 6, then just count my over/under. So if I par the par4 first I'm at -2. Since I usually shoot around a 54-56 anyway, it works out well.

Hopefully once I get better I'll count on 5s as you describe.

I've been trying with many stops and starts to get more into the game in the past 3 or 4 years; It is expensive and time consuming, but through a little luck and budgeting I am starting to come into some decent equipment which actually makes a difference.

My swing is getting better and I am considering taking a lesson or two so that I can get off the tees like a man;

Lately we have been getting out to a nice little Par 3 near the house.

I suck, but golf is one of the few things in life that actually relaxes me.

My philosophy: "Michael Jordan sucks at this game, too"

A great way to get quality lessons is to take a one-credit community college class... It'll cost you a few hundred dollars depending on where you are, but you'll get a whole semester of classes, usually at a decent local golf course. It sure beats $50-80 for one hour with a pro...

Well, then, when are we going to play? I've been shooting in the upper 90's for years (GRRRRR) but my game has slipped some since having kids.

FYI-can't play with you this weekend, as I will already by playing up at Maddens on Gull Lake. Check it out:

I've been playing for several years and still am not that good. I usually shoot in the upper 80's/low 90s for 18. It's the most frustrating game out there, but a hell of a lot of fun a lot of the time.

holy crap -- if i ever shoot that well in my entire life, i'll consider myself good. i have yet to break 100.

i totally agree with your final sentence there too. so frustrating...such highs and then complete lows from hole to hole. i am so inconsistent. but i love it.

i also have the world's worst slice when using my driver. i freak people out because instead of correcting my swing, i just play my slice. i line up pretty much aiming at about 10 o'clock, and my ball always ends up anywere from dead center of the fairway or right of that.

*golf clap* I approve. Only in a sport like golf could this be condoned as sane behaviour.

Hey you two, I don't live in the area but have extended family that we go back and visit every couple of years - when we were back last year we played a course outside of Northfield(yeah, it is an hour or so South of the Cities) called Willinger's that Golf Digest named one of the Best Places in the country to play - and is ranked #5 on their "Thifty Fifty" which is their list of the best golf courses in the country with Green Fees under $50 for 18 holes. I couldn't recommend this place enough - it is just gorgeous - the front nine plays through a wetlands and the back nine plays through a mature forest.

The picture below was from my favorite hole, the Par 5, #6:

Thanks, Chrome. I've heard good things 'boot Willinger's, but never played there myself. I'll have to coordinate a weekday rendezvous to hit this beauty.

Good suggestion, Chrome. My father-in-law has played Willingers a number of times and likes it.

For scenery alone, the best course I have played is Superior National at Lutsen.

http://www.superiornational.com/

Hills rising 900 feet above the shores of Lake Superior, it is not uncommon to see moose and other wildlife.

The Legend at Giants Ridge is a far better course, and only comes in second on scenery due to the lack of Lake Superior:

Hole 17 is gorgeous, and check out the sand trap on the 3rd hole: shaped like a giant's footprint.

I like golf a lot. I used to play quite a bit but haven't played much since moving to the city. I don't have a car so it's not easy to get to the courses.

I never got very good. I'd always shoot high 90s or low 100s on full courses. I can play pretty well on Par 3 courses, it's the long game that gets me.

I haven't been out at all this year. I'd like to go though.
