let's face it, if the NHL makes good on their zero-tolerance policy on obstruction, it's gonna hurt a big, slow goof like Hatcher in a serious way. I think the Flyers blew their chance for a cup two years ago.

I'm in this camp. Even if Hatcher stays healthy this year, he won't be nearly as effective without being able to bear-hug opposing forwards. Same for Rathje. They bought themselves a big and slow defense core.

Here's an interesting take on the wave of signings and the amount of $$ they've been pulling in-

Quote:
Take, for example, defenseman Adam Foote. He made $4.3 million in 2003-04, under the old collective bargaining agreement. Calculate the 24 percent salary rollback, assuming Foote was worth $4.3 million in the first place, and he should have signed a deal worth about $3.25 million this season. The Columbus Blue Jackets decided he improved so much during the lockout that he deserved $4.6 million a season.

Quote:
But if what happened in the first two days amounts to a salary cut, where do I sign up?

Adrian Aucoin made $3.25 million with the New York Islanders in 2003-04. Common sense suggested he should have been paid roughly $2.5 million. But why should he settle for such a pittance? The Chicago Blackhawks, among the loudest moaners under the previous system, agreed to pay him $4 million a year.

Derian Hatcher pocketed $13.2 million last month after the Detroit Red Wings bought out his contract. All told, he made about $18 million with the Wings and played 27 games, including the playoffs. Somehow, that production and a major injury warranted a four-year deal worth $14 million from Philadelphia.

As for my sabres, they need a #1 defenseman, but I don't see them winning any of these biddings wars despite losing both Zhitnik and Satan. My fingers are still crossed for Roman Hamrlik, though. Ahh...another year of mediocrity!

And the Pens will be an interesting team to watch this year, to say the least. Especially that power play.

This whole discussion is pointless anyway because:

The Thrashers aren't going to lose a game until 2027.

It's already been confirmed.

Yea, right. I think 2004 will be their only season above 500.

Nacho- I'm gonna read that later, thanks for the link. One thing I'm sure the writer misses is UFA's alway get raises. A contract you signed as a RFA 3 years ago will never weild as much as the UFA contract you just signed. Plus Foote & Audollar (you like that) signed for $$$ & $$$ only.

2 words: Winnipeg Jets

in 92-93 Selanne, Zhamnov & Tkachuck all broke in as rookies on a team with Steen, Housley, Numminen, Barnes & Shannon. They still haven't won a playoff series.

I think the spending frenzy, while a little disappointing, is pretty understandable. With so many teams having a lot of cap room, I guess it's natural for a bidding war to ensue. I doubt we'll see so many teams with so much room in the future. But we probably won't see so much top talent available at one time, either.

And Modano turned the Stars down. Where does he end up? I have a bad feeling it could be Boston.

This was really funny, btw.

I can't believe he gave Nieuwendyk & Roberts that kind of money. I bet they don't play 82 games total between the two of them.

I had no idea there was so much hockey love on the board...
I'm really curious to see where Modono ends up, I'm shocked he turned down the stars. If he does go to boston, i might finally have a reason to like that team again...
any thoughts on how the wild will come out of all this?

The Wild are another team that I don't think has done anything yet. I wonder if these teams are thinking some of the high spending clubs might need to trade otherwise serviceable players away for draft picks (i.e. Brent Sopel, Danny Markov), so they're sitting back and waiting. Just a guess...

Edmonton swaps Mike York and a conditional pick for Mike Peca.

Looks like the Isles are trimming payroll after signing Satan....

Datsyuk is fucking awesome. I became a fan of his a few years ago when he sent the puck between some defenders legs and then reached over and got it back. I wish he was on the Bruins.

The Bruins signed Leetch. Is he on the downside of his career? I really don't know anything about him.

Leetch is on the downside of his career (38 yrs old or so?) and isn't the workhorse he used to be, but he'll still be very good, esp on the PP.

I hate to admit it, but if Forsberg stays healthy (which is a big IF), they are definitely in the running.

The Isles also look pretty strong.

SEE! I was right

WOW what I shock I didn't even know Philly was in it & he'll only make 800K more than Roenick would've, who is out the door I promise. Phoe or LA

If the Kings trade for Roenick they better give up close to nothing or I'm gonna be pissed. They said they were going for long term fixes not an injury prone guy who'll be 36 by the trade dealine.
