So where should I start with them? Do they have any greatest hits type albums?

yeah, i'd go for the 1977-1990 collection. i have the '77-82 collection, but there're a few choice tunes in the next eight years.

Damnit, that album doesn't have Get A Grip On Yourself or Bring On The Nubiles. Maybe I'll actually just get a bunch of their albums instead of a greatest hits for once.

They kind of have two periods -- an early, and a late. Their late period (by which way I was introduced to them) is quite a bit more poppy (starts with approx. Aural Sculpture), albeit still quite good. Listen to "Too Precious" for quite possibly the simplest (meaning "non-pyrotechnical") and most beautiful ensemble instrumental break ever.

Shiv, their albums can be really spotty. Their first 2, however, would be a good place to start. After that be careful because they have definitely released their share of pure shit.

I'd check Amazon UK, cuz I bet there's "best of" CD's that cover both eras. Maybe they'd have the songs you want along with the hits.

All the Stranglers anybody (other than Hugh Cornwell's mum) will ever need is found on No More Heroes and Rattus Norvegicus (although Live X Cert is a good live album from the time). Their later stuff is absolute ass.

I downloaded their first 2 albums on soulseek last night so that's what I'll be listening to all fucking day. I almost bought them on Amazon last night but figured I'd save some money for once.

Without fail The Stranglers always give me a really bad headache. It's that bass sound.

Beg to differ.

"Black and White" is great, it's got enough of an edge left for one to recognize that the Stranglers had been a punk band, and it's wonderfully dark, think of Bauhaus' debut but better crafted.

"The Raven" has "Shah Shah a Go Go" which at times is my favorite Stranglers tune. "Nuclear Device" and "Dead Loss Angeles" are also solid.

"La Folie" is definitely quieter, but still worthwhile. "Feline" is useless to me, as is "Aural Sculpture" (although "Skin Deep" is a great single), "Dreamtime", and everything that followed. The cover of "All Day And All Of The Night" is godawful, but I remember liking "Sweet Smell Of Success" for a few weeks when it was released.

Interestingly, while the Stranglers' late 80's stuff I find to be crap, I think Hugh Cornwell's "Wolf" was a wonderful record.

Listened to both albums today. I think I prefer Rattus Norvegicus, though No More Heroes isn't far behind. I noticed that a few riffs on NMH sounded like they were recycled from the first album.

Anyone know how La Folie is? I really like Golden Brown.

I like "La Folie" a lot. The title track is a great mood piece, even if you don't parler francais. The album is consistent, so if you're digging "Golden Brown", you'll dig "Pin Up", "It Only Takes Two To Tango", etc.
