Such a hard genre to define but I would offer:

Jaws
Psycho
Black Christmas
Halloween
Alien/Texas Chainsaw Massacre/When a Stranger Calls/Audition/28 Days Later

Until recently the most frightning thing about the London Underground was having seen American Werewolf In London.

I guess that doesn't apply anymore but still a great film.

I can't believe we've gotten this far into this thread without the original "Evil Dead" being mentioned...

i gotta whittle this down to 5? okay, but i'm counting the Romero dead movies all as one.

28 Days Later
The Dead movies
Halloween
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Exorcist/The Omen

technically not horror but could've easily made this list:
-Alone in the Dark (NOT the one from last year)
-Alien
-Evil Dead
-Dead Alive
-Ichi the Killer
-Poltergeist
-American Werewolf in London
-Straw Dogs

maybe the Exorcist.

Like detective movies, horror is a genre i love in which there are way too few really solid movies.

we study our shit over here. earlier I was sorta disappointed in myself for not having any vampire movies, but then realized how not fucking scary vampire movies really are (well, the ones that aren't Nosferatu or starring Christopher Lee, anyway) so I don't feel so bad. Some other topics could be:

-movies that scared the shit out of you when you were little, but seem totally stupid now
-best horror movie deaths
-best horror movie villains
-most random tit shot in a horror movie
-best use of Donald Pleasance
-biggest bust
-wes craven's biggest piece of shit
-worst adaptation of a Stephen King book.

Salem's Lot ( 1979)

When that kid was scratching at the window. Freaked me out for months. Watched it again a few decades later and ... well.......not the same effect.

Tourist Trap

Scared the piss out of me when i was a kid. One of the few films that gave me nightmares, and had me peakin' out from underneath the covers.

Watched it a few years ago.....yikes.

Not a huge fan of the genre, certainly not into slasher stuff at all. The psycho-horror (small P) is about it for me, and the best one of those I ever saw, hands down was 1961's The Innocents, film adaptation of Henry James' novel The Turn Of The Screw. Superb ghost story with Deborah Kerr and Michael Redgrave, but the two children steal the movie.
