For me, it's a toss-up between Olivia Tremor Control and Of Montreal. I guess if I was forced to choice, I'd go with OTC, but Of Montreal has a ton of great albums too. It really just depends what kind of mood I'm in.

I'm sure a poll like this already exists, but I can't find it. Maybe it was on CMJ.

Anyway, NMH is my choice.

does it really matter if it existed in the past? if it hasnt been brought up pretty recently (especially considering he just joined the forum) it's not really worth mentioning.
i've just noticed people complain a lot about bringing up topics already posted about even if it was something mentioned months before.

it just seems worthless.
this isn't to you specifically "g" so don't think i'm bitching at you at all, considering i've never even seen you act like an asshole about anything, but just in general, recently i've seen people being huge cunts about it. i mean unless it was repeated within the past couple of days, just get over it.

So in addition to Obner, I'm supposed to search the CMJ boards before posting anything too? Sure...

I voted for Neutral Milk Hotel. The Apples in Stereo is #2.

Well, it would be pointless to have two polls on the exact same topic, if a previous poll existed. It might not exist. Maybe I just imagined it.

I wasn't trying to be an ass or anything. I just find it strange that I can't find a thread I remember pretty well.

if you read all the way through my post, I said you aren't an asshole and it wasn't specifically directed to you.
Yeah it would be pointless, but I don't see a problem in posting something a month later or a few months later than a previous thread on the same topic. A persons tastes could have changed, lots of people could have forgotten about the thread in general, some people just don't know it existed. Who knows? It just seems like a lot of effort to go through over something very small and simple, if someone doesn't agree with the thread being on the forum, delete it if youre a moderator or ignore it and it'll be taken off the front page in a matter of minutes.

I'll take OTC by a mile; even though I am a fucking E6 apologist/junkie; mainly because I saw all of thgese assholes play live one too many times in Athens, Cubist Castle is stupid good.

I'm not big on Elf Power or Neutral Milk Hotel, really. NMH has a few songs that I like a lot, and a ton that do absolutely nothing for me. I mostly just like "In An Aeroplane Over the Sea" and "Two Headed Boy". That "semen stains the mountaintops" (I forgot the title) one isn't bad either.

Elf Power is about 1,000% better than they used to be.

Live or in studio? Because from what I've read (I've heard various songs but no full albums..) their albums are just getting worse and worse.

Do you have the album with "The Sun Is Forever" on it? I loved, and I mean jesus christ I loved that song. I haven't listened to it in about two or so years though.

I hope that's even what it's called. It's been a long time.

Live, Elf Power fucking destroys.

On record, I have to disagree with Yail. My favorite from them is Red King, their 2nd record (and in many respects, their first real record as a band).

At what point did they improve? I don't like what little I've heard, but maybe they're just not for me.

When I lived in Athens, I was subjected to Elf Power quite a few times and actually hung out with dude who is the braintrust (his analysis of my record collection yielded a discussion of Maiden--go figure)

When I saw them open for OTC a couple months ago, I was really impressed by the Band and especially the songs introduced as off the newest album. I'm still curious to hear it but havent gotten off my wallet as to search it out.

It was looser and more monger-y than i remembered their sound being.

Maybe Drinky or Derris can fill in since they were in attendance.

I am jealous of everyone on this board who has seen Olivia Tremor Control live. WHY won't they come to DC?!

no matter my credentials, i can never trump you on E6 or related Aero.....You are the goto maestro my OK brother by another mother. Wish you had the advantage of my perspective, bra---it was fun....

Yeah, I was real down on Elf Power and even Of Montreal in the day; and I didnt come to enjoy NMH until YEARS later because Mangum had this bad habit of interjecting himself into OTC shows for attention....it was weird.

Busty and Squirggle will attest to this: There were two scenes in Athens at that point: indie(40 Watt) and Jam(GA Theatre); our band fell somewhere in the middle so we had a great chance to check shit out without having to try to suck up for an opening gig.

To me OTC broke a lot of those barriers but instead of embracing that they went WAY TOO NOISY and alienated a lot of people.

What's funny is that I honestly remember the local hype around "On Avery Island" being so much bigger than when "When The Aeroplane...." came out. Weird, eh.

Do you think they were too noisy, or do you think that that's what turned most people off from them? Other than that 11-minute piece on Black Foliage that isn't all that interesting (but still has it's moments), I think they incorporate the noise well into their music.

And On Avery Island is a much better album anyway. But yes, it's weird thinking that the hype on that one is bigger.

Did Beulah used to be part of Elephant 6? Because they're the only band I like out of all them.

I just realized that every member of Neutral Milk Hotel was at the Olivia Tremor Control show this week.

Bastards.

Yeah, they did for a long time; but it got to be much; the irony was not lost on me that the kings of the scene had descended into a much more wanked out band than even the most gratuitous jammies of the time.

I actually spoke to will and bill at the time and kinda asked them to take a look around: They were drawing huge crowds of kids from that broke ever Athens clique-a-type. I encouraged them to emphasize their poppiness and spend some money on a light/stage show that went beyond their girlfriends/hangers-on improvising some gar "performance art" crap. But nobody cares what I think.....hahahahaha
