this is such bullshit...

http://www.nynewsday.com/news/local/cri ... -breaking2

these same people would be bitching and complaining that the police "didn't do enough to protect us" if terorists bombed the subway.

what a joke.

They should rebel by carrying bags filled with old ground beef. Take that the man! Dig through that!

Hey, we'll be dead, but at least we'll be politically correct dead.

Steve

edit:However, searching bags in the subway is just some feel good BS that's not going to stop anything anyway.

i read that in your first post. i really think you're mistaking the ACLU with someone else. Sure, blame the hippies and liberals away, and yo're probably right on some counts, but the ACLU is far more likely to just shrug and say "at least we have our rights". I mean, aren't they siding with Rush Limbaugh right now?

I just don't subscribe to giving up any of those rights, because give 'em an inch and they'll be demanding colonostomys as a boarding process. this is a major city and people don't have time for tht bullshit.

i disagree. i think in these times it's better to be safe than sorry. to say that they'll be searching your ass is blowing shit way out of proportion, and it will NEVER get to that point.

big deal....stop, search bag, move on. the fact that it IS a big city makes it that much more important.

Garth, if this is a violation of essential liberty, then we lost it long ago with metal detectors at the airports (if not earlier).

My thoughts on the matter...

I generally don't mind if they check my bag, but I can see how it can be annoying when you're rushing to catch a train on your way to work or school. I tend to run late a lot and this would irritate me.

On the other hand, this whole privacy issue is crap. People need to calm down about it. I think people are just looking for an excuse to sue the city and make some money.

but can't internment camps fall under "better safe than sorry"? I mean, there's a fine line here and I for one am not happy about seeing that crossed. There are risks that come with liberty and privacy that i'm willing to take. There's plenty of fun absence of seearch and seizure on the eastern bloc. Liberty is dwindling quickly enough in this country without us aiding it.

I don't disagree.

The airport is a perfect example of how silly things have gotten. They don't even let you take lighters on a plane anymore!

My biggest beef with this kinda stuff is that it seems alot of expense for very little gain. If people really think that random bag searches will catch terrorists, then they're out of their tree.

you're alive aren't you?

no more planes have gone down, and there hasn't been any terrorist attacks on our soil in quite some time has there?

well there's your gain.

Man, its precisely that kind of reasoning that lets this kinda stuff happen. Your "cause-effect" isn't rational. Ever since I quit smoking I haven't gotten a speeding ticket. That doesn't mean that they are related.

We aren't safer because of taking shoes off, or no lighters, or any of that stuff. We just aren't. If you feel safer, that's great. Its only giving piece of mind to the public (and costing the public money, btw) but its really not effective.

Coolio used to work the security gate at LAX.

i'm not saying your wrong, but how will we know we are safer? If it's been 4 years without incident, who's to say we are not? How do you judge the effectiveness of measures without looking at the results?

The day after 9/11 you could ask anybody if having to be inconvienced would bother them if it prevented them from being attacked again, and I think at least 90% of them would have said no. The public does feel safer and now they want their 15 minutes of time back. They don't want to leave earlier or wake up earlier.

Touche' algoddon. I have always said if these buggers REALLY wanted to fuck with us, they'd start taking small towns off the map...(Not that I am espousing these things, BUT) Everyone in NYC knows its 50/50 whether you won't get shot/raped/stabbed/mugged/fondled/talked to by a damn ol weirdo..but depsite Yail's recent travails we usually don't encounter this type of stuff. They need better psiops if they really stand a chance.

if the terrorists bombed, like, kansas (is this an obnerless state?) i swear to god this country would build 300 ft. steel walls around its perimeter. holy shit the very thought is frightening me.

i actually would love to see a study done on the effectiveness of these things. i really would. and something that is truely objective, too. its really hard these days to find any information about any subject such as this that isn't riddled with left or right opinions all through it.

I believe (and may have read something to the effect of) 9/11 happened not because security wasn't in place, but it wasn't effective. our guard was down because "nothing ever happens."

we've got databases and databases of names and information but its not being shared. the technology is old, the databases aren't compatible (making cross-referencing info hard/impossible), and there is in-fighting in the US government between agencies. if we had spent the billions we are spending on the war (or is it just a struggle now?) beefing up these systems i would propose that we would actually be safer. we'd be safer because we would have better tools to work with and also because we wouldn't have started a war that is essentially being used as a recruiting tool for radicals as to why they should mobilize against the west.
